Are the Immunohistochemistry-Based Biomarkers Helpful for Predicting Prognosis in Patients with Surgically Resected Cholangiocarcinoma?

open access: yesGut and Liver, 2023
Background/Aims: Bilateral endoscopic drainage with self-expanding metallic stent (SEMS) can be used to effectively manage hilar malignant biliary obstruction. However, the benefits of using a trisegment drainage method remain unknown.

Establishment of a humanized patient‐derived xenograft mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer for preclinical evaluation of combination immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We have established a humanized orthotopic patient‐derived xenograft (Hu‐oPDX) mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) that recapitulates human tumor–immune interactions. Using combined anti‐PD‐L1/anti‐CD73 immunotherapy, we demonstrate the model's improved biological relevance and enhanced translational value for preclinical ...

Primary Results of the SALAMANDER Registry: A Multicenter Observational Cohort Study

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background The balance between thromboembolic complications and bleeding risk in anticoagulated patients with atrial fibrillation remains challenging, with left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) representing a potential alternative.

In vitro and in silico modelling of ROS1‐positive non‐small cell lung cancer reveals fusion‐dependent tyrosine kinase inhibitor responses

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Drug resistance limits treatment success in a subset of lung cancers driven by ROS1 gene alterations. Using patient‐derived cells and computer simulations, we studied three key mutations and how they affect five targeted drugs. The mutations reduced drug effectiveness in different ways by altering protein structure and behavior.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Therapeutic vaccines for chronic diseases: successes and technical challenges [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2011
Abstract Chronic, non-communicable diseases are the major cause of death and disability worldwide and have replaced infectious diseases as the major burden of society in large parts of the world. Despite the complexity of chronic diseases, relatively few predisposing risk factors have been identified by the World Health Organization ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Technical Complications and Marginal Bone Loss Depending on the Crown Material of Dental Implants in the Posterior Region: A 3-Year Randomized Clinical Study

open access: yesDentistry Journal
Background/Objectives: This single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial evaluated the impact of two crown materials—lithium disilicate (LS2) and a polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic (HC)—on the marginal bone loss (MBL) and the technical ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...
