The Predictability of Interdecadal Changes in ENSO Activity and ENSO Teleconnections

open access: yes, 2006
El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in a century-long integration of a Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC) coupled general circulation model (CGCM) drives rainfall and temperature changes over Australia that are generally consistent with ...

Relationship Between Atmospheric Teleconnections and the Northern Hemisphere's Circumpolar Vortex

open access: yes, 2021
The Northern Hemispheric circumpolar vortex (NHCPV) is the hemispheric‐scale, middle‐ and upper‐tropospheric wind belt circumnavigating the North Pole.

Climate Network Analysis Detects Hot Spots under Anthropogenic Climate Change

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2023
Anthropogenic climate change poses a significant threat to both natural and social systems worldwide. In this study, we aim to identify regions most impacted by climate change using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National ...

On the robustness of ENSO teleconnections [PDF]

open access: yesClimate Dynamics, 2007
Using observations covering the last 128 years we show that apparent changes in El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections can be explained by chance and stem from sampling variability. This result is backed by experiments in which an atmosphere model is driven by 123 years of observed sea surface temperature.

Characterisation of Drought and Wet Events in the Paraíba do Sul River Basin—Brazil

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Trend analysis identified statistically significant reductions in precipitation (at the 5% significance level) at specific pluviometric stations in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, while other areas, mainly in Minas Gerais, experienced significant increases in annual and seasonal rainfall, particularly during summer and spring. These significant trends at

Impact of North Atlantic Teleconnection Patterns on Northern European Sea Level

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2017
Northern European sea levels show a non-stationary link to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The location of the centers of the NAO dipole, however, can be affected through the interplay with the East Atlantic (EAP) and the Scandinavian (SCAN ...

Seasonal prediction of Euro-Atlantic teleconnections from multiple systems

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2020
Seasonal mean atmospheric circulation in Europe can vary substantially from year to year. This diversity of conditions impacts many socioeconomic sectors.

The Role of the Indian Ocean Basin-Wide and El Niño–Southern Oscillation Modes in Interannual Rainfall Variability over South America during Austral Summer

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2021
This paper examines the relative role of the Indian Ocean basin-wide (IOBW) mode and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the atmospheric circulation and rainfall interannual variations over South America (SA) during southern summer of the 1951‒2016 ...

The Crisis of the 14th Century: Teleconnections between Environmental and Societal Change?

open access: yes, 2019
Pre-modern critical interactions of nature and society can best be studied during the so-called "Crisis of the 14th Century". While historiography has long ignored the environmental framing of historcial processes and scientists have over-emphasized ...

The Relation Between Two Types of Frequent Wave Breaking Over Southeastern Siberia and Different Conditions of Unseasonable Midsummer Weather Over Japan

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
To analyze the different morphologies of Rossby wave breaking over Eastern Siberia and their relationships with the anomalous patterns of temperature and precipitation that cause unseasonable midsummer weather conditions over Japan, we performed regression analyses against the interannual variabilities of the anticyclonic and cyclonic Rossby wave ...
