Terahertz Generation and Acceleration

CLEO Pacific Rim Conference, 2018
Laser based multi-cycle THz generation by difference frequency mixing has been pushed to optical to THz conversion efficiencies close to 1%. This opens up the possibility to implement THz driven electron and X-ray sources.

Terahertz generator - spherotron

Infocommunications and Radio Technologies, 2018
A simulation of terahertz generator - spherotron was performed. It was shown such a generator has a very simple design and efficiency of 30 %, when beam current in a pulse of 1-10 kA and a voltage about 45 kV.

Designs of terahertz waveguides for efficient parametric terahertz generation

Applied Physics Letters, 2003
We show that for a slab waveguide, while pump and idler waves are weakly affected by the waveguide, their parametrically generated terahertz (THz) wave propagates in the form of multimodes. These waves may destructively interfere with one another in terms of their phases, resulting in inefficient THz parametric conversion.

Generation of broadband terahertz vortex beams

Optics Letters, 2014
We propose and demonstrate a method for generating broadband terahertz (THz) vortex beams. We convert a THz radially polarized beam into a THz vortex beam via achromatic polarization optical elements for THz waves and characterize the topological charge of the generated vortex beam by measuring the spatial distribution of the phase of the THz wave at ...

Terahertz wave generation by nanoconfinement of light

Applied Optics, 2014
This paper presents a novel nanosource of continuous terahertz (THz) wave radiation based on difference frequency generation (DFG). Both the optical and THz waves are confined in a nanoscale plasmonic waveguide. The results of theoretical investigations indicate that the appropriate geometry of the plasmonic waveguide has a relatively long optical and ...

Dynamically phase-matched terahertz generation

Optics Letters, 2012
We present the generation of intense terahertz pulses by optical rectification of 780 nm pulses in a large area gallium phosphide crystal. The velocity mismatch between optical and terahertz pulses thereby limits the bandwidth of the terahertz pulses. We show that this limitation can be overcome by a dynamic modification of the refractive index of the ...

Broadband generation of terahertz radiation in a waveguide

Optics Letters, 2004
We report a novel geometry that allows for the phase-matched generation of broadband terahertz radiation in a polymer-based parallel-plate metal waveguide by means of optical rectification. Both the optical pump beam and the generated terahertz radiation propagate in the fundamental mode of the waveguide. This allows for noncritical phase matching over

Terahertz generation with tandem seeded optical parametric generators

Optics Letters, 2005
A simple difference frequency generation (DFG) scheme based on two seeded optical parametric generators is presented as a tunable terahertz (THz) source. Using the nonlinear optical crystal 4-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium-tosylate (DAST) as the DFG crystal, our system has demonstrated continuous and seamless tunable operation from 1.6 to 4.5 ...

Multicycle terahertz generation in virtual PPLN

Optics Letters
Multicycle terahertz pulses are in urgent demand for spectroscopy, manipulation of condensed matter, and particle acceleration. We experimentally demonstrate generating terahertz pulses with tens-of-cycles duration by optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in a bulk LiNbO3 crystal in the regime of nonlinear mixing of ordinary and ...
