Tunnelling through the terahertz range

Physics World, 1997
When semiconductor nanostructures are subjected to a strong high-frequency radiation field, they exhibit a type of quantum transport known as photon-assisted tunnelling. The radiation helps the electrons to tunnel between two regions of the semiconductor that are separated by a small barrier, leading to increased current flow.

Obtaining terahertz-range metamaterials by laser engraving

Journal of Optical Technology, 2012
This paper discusses the results of forming lattices of resonance and polarizing planar elements—metamaterials that serve the function of band-pass filters and polarizers of the terahertz range of wavelengths, made by the direct laser engraving of a metallized polymeric film.

Nanostructures in the Terahertz Range

2014
With advances in technology, terahertz imaging and spectroscopy are beginning to move out of the laboratory and find applications in areas as diverse as security screening, medicine, art conservation and field archaeology. Nevertheless, there is still a need to improve upon the performance of existing terahertz systems to achieve greater compactness ...

Multiple-Band Metamaterial Absorbers of Terahertz Range

2018 International Conference on Actual Problems of Electron Devices Engineering (APEDE), 2018
The paper is concerned with a three constructions of multiple-band metamaterial absorbers of terahertz (THz) range. In this paper, an absorber with two nested split ring resonators (SRRs) is introduced that its absorption spectrum has three absorption peaks by the values of 99,8%, 97,52%, and 94,98% at the frequencies of 8,5; 14,7 and 23,9 THz ...

Cavity design of a terahertz-range gyrotron

2010 Abstracts IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science, 2010
The project's purpose is to design a microwave source of 670 GHz range radiation with enough power to cause breakdown in the air. The device in question will be a gyrotron oscillator and part of the challenge is designing an interaction cavity for this device.

Variable angle terahertz impulse ranging on cylinders

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO 2000). Technical Digest. Postconference Edition. TOPS Vol.39 (IEEE Cat. No.00CH37088), 2000
Summary form only given. Optoelectronically generated freely propagating terahertz (THz) impulse ranging experiments have been demonstrated. The subpicosecond resolution permits temporal isolation of scattering mechanisms. Limitations of previously demonstrated systems are the fixed bistatic angle between the transmitter and receiver and wide aperture ...

Investigation of metamaterials for terahertz frequency range

SPIE Proceedings, 2011
Metamaterials are artificial materials with unusual properties that do not exist in nature and basically could consist of subwavelength metallic patterns printed on dielectric substrate. In this paper, we present a theoretical and experimental investigations of metamaterials designed for THz applications.

Single-Photon Detectors in the Terahertz Range

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 2011
Semiconductor quantum dot detectors as well as semiconductor charge-sensitive infrared phototransistors are described. They are the only detectors that can count single photons in the terahertz region at present. In terms of the noise equivalent power (NEP), the detectors realize experimental values on the order of 10-21 W/Hz1/2, while theoretically ...

Terahertz range profile of the tilted-plate

SPIE Proceedings, 2017
The range profile is studied first in the microwave band. With the advent of the terahertz radar technology, the range profile is studied from microwave band to the terahertz band, which is the terahertz range profile (TRP). The outstanding feature of TRP is that it can obtain the 3-D shape and the range information of the target by one ultra-short ...
