ABSTRACT Oropharyngeal food processing exhibits a remarkable diversity among vertebrates, reflecting the evolution of specialised ‘processing centres’ associated with the mandibular, hyoid, and branchial arches. Although studies have detailed various food‐processing strategies and mechanisms across vertebrates, a coherent and comprehensive terminology ...

In social insect colonies, diseased or dead brood is identified and removed by workers to prevent the infection of the whole colony. Here, bumble bee larvae exposed to a bacterium (Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. aizawai (strain: ABTS‐1857)) based biopesticide were removed more frequently than wounded or untreated control larvae. This shows that bumble bee

Strength, decay and termite resistance of oriented kenaf fiberboards
The development of oriented fiberboards made from kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) and their suitability as a construction material has been investigated. Three different types of boards consisting of five layers with individual orientations were prepared using a combination of low molecular weight and high molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin

Resistance of Insecticide-Treated Foam Board Insulation Against the Eastern Subterranean Termite and the Formosan Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) [PDF]
Three foam board types, one untreated control, one containing 2,000 ppm disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT), and one containing 1,000 ppm deltamethrin, were exposed to field populations of the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), and the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki.

Natural Resistance of Seven Amazon Woods to Xylophagous Termite Nasutitermes octopilis (Banks)
Some Amazonian woods are considered highly resistant to the attack of microorganisms; however, which ones present the highest resistance is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the natural resistance of seven woods to xylophagous termite Nasutitermes ...

The Cognitive Foundations of Teaching
ABSTRACT The propensity to teach is vital to human cultural evolution and to our ecological dominance of the planet, but its cognitive foundations remain poorly understood. Traditional explanations argue that teaching hinges on particular cognitive pre‐requisites, such as Theory of Mind.

Leachability, decay, and termite resistance of wood treated with metaborates
The formation of insoluble metaborates in wood was investigated by impregnating the wood with borax and metallic salts, after which their properties (e.g., leachability in running water and biological resistance) were evaluated. The solubility of three metaborates in acidic solutions was also evaluated.

Efficiency of Vegetable Oils in Wood Resistance to Cryptotermes brevis Termites [PDF]
ABSTRACT Natural products have been studied in order to ensure environmental sustainability, human health, and diminish the use of traditional products. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of pure andiroba (Carapa guianensis), copaiba (Copaifera langsdorffii) and jatropha (Jatropha curcas) oils and enriched with iodine (I2) on ...

Improved Durability of Wood Strand-Based Panels Using Guayule
In this study, the most effective application method of guayule resin and its effects on termite and fungal decay biological performances of wood strand-based (WSB) panels were explored. Southern yellow pine (Pinus spp.
