Current collection by the tethered satellite
25th Anniversary, IEEE Conference Record - Abstracts. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (Cat. No.98CH36221), 1998Summary form only given, as follows. Both measurements and models have revealed that the tethered satellite in the TSS-1R mission collected a large current, 2-3 times in excess of the current predicted by the theory of Parker and Murphy. Using 3-D particle-in-cell simulations the origin of the current enhancement is analyzed in detail. Flow of currents

Extension of tethered satellites in the atmosphere
Acta Astronautica, 2003An important application of tethered satellites isatmospheric studies by extension of a subsatellite into the atmosphere through tether while the parent spacecraft *ies at an altitude high enough so that the deleterious e+ects of the atmosphere on it are inconsequential. The key issue in the operation is the swift extension of the tether.

Constrained Motion of Tethered Satellites
Volume 6: 5th International Conference on Multibody Systems, Nonlinear Dynamics, and Control, Parts A, B, and C, 2005The orbital motion of tethered satellites is a highly complex nonlinear problem. This investigation sets out to formulate a new method that significantly simplifies the dynamic analysis of tethered satellite systems. This is accomplished using the fundamental equation for constrained dynamic systems, which was formulated by Udwadia and Kalaba.

Three-dimensional vibrations of tethered satellite systems
Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 1991The three-dimensional free vibrations of an orbiter-towed tethered satellite system with nominally vertical tether during stationkeeping phase are studied analytically. The tether is modeled as an elastic continuum with mass and the orbiter and the subsatellite as two concentrated masses.

Detection of Tethered Satellite Systems
The Journal of the Astronautical Sciences, 2004The detection and identification of tethered satellite systems is a problem of current interest. Most previous studies focused on the detection and identification of one tethered satellite system using the observations of one satellite in the system. Here, we consider the problem of determining which of two or more satellites that are observed to be in

ATMOSPHERIC PERTURBATION AND CONTROL OF A SHUTTLE/TETHERED SATELLITE
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1979A simplified model of the strong atmospheric perturbation of a small satellite attached to the orbiter by a long, straight tether predicts undesirable uncontrolled libration motions similar to those from sophisticated models. The simplified model is used to compare performance limitations of two simple control systems that rely only on tether tension ...

Nonlinear stabilization of tethered satellites
Proceedings of the 27th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2003A set of dynamic equations governing the dynamics of a tethered satellite system and stabilizing tension control laws in feedback form are derived. The tether is assumed rigid and massless, and the equations of motion are derived using the system Lagrangian.

Tension sensor for tethered satellites
[1989] Proceedings. The Twenty-First Southeastern Symposium on System Theory, 2003The design, construction, and testing of a tension sensor for sensing tension in a flexible tether connecting two orbiting satellites are presented. The analog sensor measures the tension profiles for deployment, retrieval, and disturbances of the tethered satellite system.

Tethered Satellites in the geophysical environment
Il Nuovo Cimento C, 1993A short presentation is given of the basic physical principle of a Tethered-Satellite System. The motion equations are summarized. A variety of physical phenomena in the upper atmosphere and ionosphere, as well as related to geomagnetism and gravity field will benefit by such type of missions; they are briefly illustrated and discussed.
