Various Methods of Controlling the Deployment of a Tethered Satellite

Journal of Vibration and Control, 2003
The deployment of a subsatellite from a mother spaceship moving on a circular orbit is a delicate operation for a tethered satellite system because this process leads to an unstable motion with respect to the stable radial relative equilibrium of such a system if the tether length is kept constant.

Deployment and Retrieval of Shuttle Supported Tethered Satellites

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 1982
Summary: The general dynamical model is used to investigate the deployment and retrieval dynamics and control of the tether connected shuttle/subsatellite system. Control of the in-plane motion is provided by letting the difference between the rate of change of the undeformed length of the tether and a commanded length rate vary linearly with the state

Identification and orbit determination of a tethered satellite system

Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2001
Orbital motion of a tethered satellite system, composed of two satellites and an inextensible tether, is considered by using a perturbed two-body model. This approach is adopted so that the determination of the orbit of one of the satellites can be attempted without using observations of the motion of the other satellite in the system.

Aerogravity-Assist Maneuvering of a Tethered Satellite System

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 2004
Two new implementations of a tethered satellite system to provide aeroassist during a planetary flyby are investigated. In each mission scenario the interaction of the Martian atmosphere with an aerodynamic lifting surface, which is tethered to an orbiter, is used to perturb the flight path of the system. The aerodynamic forces generated by interacting

Strategies for three dimensional deployment of tethered satellites

Mechanics Research Communications, 1998
Tethered satellites deployed from the Space Shuttle have been proposed for diverse applications. A funda- mental issue in the utilization of tethers is quick deployment and retrieval of the attached payload. Inordinate librations of the tether during deployment and retrieval is undesirable.

Dynamical characteristics of a tethered stabilized satellite

1997
This work presents a preliminary investigation of the stability characteristics of a tethered satellite attitude with respect to the local vertical. Other relevant topics analyzed are the influence of orbital eccentricity and tether oscillations on the satellite dynamics and identification of possible resonances.

Controlling short-tethered satellites

Acta Astronautica, 1980
Abstract Because of the interference with the spacecraft, especially particle experiments have to be performed on cable booms. Also for other extravehicular activities telescopic arms, bar linkages and tethers are used. The objective of this paper is to describe a method of controlling and manoeuvring short-tethered systems.

Modeling and Simulation of Flexible Tethered Satellite System

2018 15th International Conference on Electrical Engineering, Computing Science and Automatic Control (CCE), 2018
This paper presents the dynamic equations of a flexible tethered satellite system in a circular orbit. The tether is modelled as a combination of point masses connected with massless rods. Through this model the flexibility and distributed mass of tether are considered.
