Tethers for Small Satellite Applications

1995
This paper begins with a sketch of the history of space tether concepts and then describes the four tether orbital flight tests flown in 1992-94 (TSS-1, SEDS-1, PMG, and SEDS-2). It reviews currently funded flight experiments and studies aimed at near-term flights. Next it provides a brief tutorial on some key aspects of space tether concepts.

Research and development of tethered satellite cluster systems

Proceedings. 2000 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2000) (Cat. No.00CH37113), 2002
We propose the concept of tethered satellite cluster systems, as an application of the RoboSat clusters. The system consists of some satellites joined by tethers, and keeps and changes the constellation with tension/length control of the tethers to perform various orbit service missions.

Stability of a tethered satellite subjected to stochastic forces

Acta Astronautica, 1991
Abstract This paper considers the problem of the relative equilibrium and stability of a tethered subsatellite (TSS), when the aerodynamic forces can be only probabilistically evaluated. The location in the space of the TSS is thus a stochastic process. The range of possible stationary states of the system is determined and a procedure is adopted for

Satellite attitude stabilization through tether

Acta Astronautica, 1995
Abstract Effective utilization of gravity gradient moments for attitude control demands rather slender satellite shapes. This imposes a major system design constraint and, further, provides only limited attitude accuracies, especially in the presence of disturbances and/or excitation.
