The excitability of sensory neurons depends on the expression of various voltage-gated Na+ channel isoforms. The tetrodotoxin-resistant (TTXr) Na+ channel Na(v)1.8 accounts for the electroresponsiveness of nociceptive neurons and contributes to inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Mechanism of Action of Tetrodotoxin (TTX) and Saxitoxin (STX)
1971Marine toxins such as TTX and STX have aroused the interest of physiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, and biological warfare people, as well as writers of spy and mystery stories. In the hands of the neuroscientist they have been turned into helpful instruments vital for the study of nerve function and excitable membranes.

Effect of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on some brain neurotransmitters in rats.
Journal of natural toxins, 2002Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent marine neurotoxin named after the order of fish from which it is most commonly associated, the Tetraodontiforms, or the tetraodon pufferfish. In the present study the crude TTX was extracted from pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus collected from the Red Sea in Egypt.

Unilateral transtympanic administration of the sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin (75 microl of 3 mM TTX in 0.1 M citrate buffer, pH 5.0) produced behavioral symptoms indicative of unilateral vestibular disruption. Following survival times of 2 and 24 h immunocytochemistry for Fos revealed asymmetric labeling in the granular and molecular layers of ...
