Quantitative detection of tetrodotoxin (TTX) by a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor
Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, 2008Abstract We report the quantitative antibody-based detection of a low-molecular weight molecule tetrodotoxin (TTX) (∼319 Da) by inhibition assay with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. A novel anti-TTX antibody sensing surface was developed by chemically immobilizing TTX on a gold film with a mixed self assembled monolayer (SAM) consisting of ...

THE SCENT OF DANGER: TETRODOTOXIN (TTX) AS AN OLFACTORY CUE OF PREDATION RISK
Ecological Monographs, 2006Larvae of the California newt (Taricha torosa) exhibit striking predator-avoidance behavior, escaping to refuges in response to a chemical cue from cannibalistic adults. In laboratory flow-tank experiments, stream water collected near free-ranging adults induced hiding responses in 100% of the larvae tested.

High concentrations of the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) were detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) in the Platyhelminthes Stylochoplana sp. from Pilot Bay (Tauranga, New Zealand). This is the first detection of TTX in this genus. Concentrations were monitored from March to November (2013) and found to significantly decrease from ...

LC-MS/MS method for the determination of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on a triple quadruple mass spectrometer
Food Additives and Contaminants - Part A Chemistry, Analysis, Control, Exposure and Risk Assessment, 2016Tetrodotoxin (TTX), often referred to as the 'puffer fish' poison, is a marine toxin and it has been identified as the agent responsible for many food poisoning incidents around the world. It is a neurotoxin that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, resulting in respiratory paralysis and even death in severe cases.

Acute cardiovascular, antiarrhythmic and toxic effects of tetrodotoxin (TTX) in unanesthetized dogs
Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, 1972Abstract Five unanesthetized dogs were given iv doses of 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4 and 4.8 μg/kg of TTX infused over 5 min periods at 65 min intervals. In similar experiments 4 anesthetized dogs were given serial doses of saline. Emesis occurred in 3 or 4 dogs after each dose of TTX, and the highest dose produced respiratory arrest and death in 4 of the 5 ...

Micro-distributions of tetrodotoxin (TTX) in the skin of a brackish-water puffer Tetraodon nigroviridis were investigated by means of a monoclonal anti-TTX antibody under light and transmission electron microscope. In light microscopy TTX antigen was visualized as brown color in undifferentiated basal cells and succiform cells of the skin, while in ...

In May 2002, two parasitic copepods, Pseudocaligus fugu and Taeniacanthus sp., were collected from the body surface and gill of the grass puffer Takifugu niphobles, respectively, in Takehara city, Hiroshima Prefecture, faced with Seto Inland Sea located in the western part of Japan.

The excitability of sensory neurons depends on the expression of various voltage-gated Na+ channel isoforms. The tetrodotoxin-resistant (TTXr) Na+ channel Na(v)1.8 accounts for the electroresponsiveness of nociceptive neurons and contributes to inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Mechanism of Action of Tetrodotoxin (TTX) and Saxitoxin (STX)
1971Marine toxins such as TTX and STX have aroused the interest of physiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, and biological warfare people, as well as writers of spy and mystery stories. In the hands of the neuroscientist they have been turned into helpful instruments vital for the study of nerve function and excitable membranes.

Effect of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on some brain neurotransmitters in rats.
Journal of natural toxins, 2002Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent marine neurotoxin named after the order of fish from which it is most commonly associated, the Tetraodontiforms, or the tetraodon pufferfish. In the present study the crude TTX was extracted from pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus collected from the Red Sea in Egypt.
