Solar and stellar photospheric abundances

open access: yesLiving Reviews in Solar Physics, 2016
The determination of photospheric abundances in late-type stars from spectroscopic observations is a well-established field, built on solid theoretical foundations.

On the physical size of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 7089 (M2)

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2022
ABSTRACT We study the outer regions of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 7089 based on new Dark Energy Camera observations. The resulting background-cleaned stellar density profile reveals the existence of an extended envelope. We confirm previous results that cluster stars are found out up to ∼1° from the cluster’s centre, which is ...

On the physical mechanisms governing the cloud lifecycle in the Central Molecular Zone of the Milky Way [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2018
We apply an analytic theory for environmentally-dependent molecular cloud lifetimes to the Central Molecular Zone of the Milky Way. Within this theory, the cloud lifetime in the Galactic centre is obtained by combining the time-scales for gravitational instability, galactic shear, epicyclic perturbations and cloud-cloud collisions.

The role of galactic dynamics in shaping the physical properties of giant molecular clouds in Milky Way-like galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
ABSTRACT We examine the role of the large-scale galactic-dynamical environment in setting the properties of giant molecular clouds in Milky Way-like galaxies. We perform three high-resolution simulations of Milky Way-like discs with the moving-mesh hydrodynamics code arepo, yielding a statistical sample of ${\sim}80\, 000$ giant ...

Analysis of the physical nature of 22 New VVV Survey Globular Cluster candidates in the Milky Way bulge [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
In order to characterize 22 new globular cluster (GC) candidates in the Galactic bulge, we present their colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and Ks-band luminosity functions (LFs) using the near-infrared VVV database as well as Gaia-DR2 proper motion dataset.

Coordinated mm/sub-mm observations of Sagittarius A* in May 2007 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
At the center of the Milky Way, with a distance of ~8 kpc, the compact source Sagittarius A* (SgrA*) can be associated with a super massive black hole of ~4x10^6 solar masses. SgrA* shows strong variability from the radio to the X-ray wavelength domains.

Giving physical significance to the Hi-GAL data: determining the distance of cold dusty cores in the Milky Way [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2011
Context. Hi-GAL, an open time key-project of the Herschel satellite, was awarded 343 hours observing time to carry out a 5-band photometric imaging survey at 70, 160, 250, 350, and 500 μm of a |b| ≤ 1° wide strip of the Milky Way Galactic plane in the longitude range -70° ≤ l ≤ 70°.

A Study of the Properties and Dynamics of the Disk of Satellites in a Milky-Way-like Galaxy System

open access: yesGalaxies, 2023
The dynamics of the satellite systems of Milky-Way-like galaxies offer a useful means by which to study the galaxy formation process in the cosmological context. It has been suggested that the currently observed anisotropic distribution of the satellites

The connection between the host halo and the satellite galaxies of the Milky Way [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Many properties of the Milky Way's dark matter halo, including its mass assembly history, concentration, and subhalo population, remain poorly constrained.

Investigating halo substructures with annual modulation signature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Galaxy hierarchical formation theories, numerical simulations, the discovery of the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy (SagDEG) in 1994 and more recent investigations suggest that the dark halo of the Milky Way can have a rich phenomenology containing ...
