Thermally-activated atomic rearrangements in elastically deformed metallic glasses

Materials Chemistry and Physics, 2011
Abstract This study investigates by molecular dynamics the response of model metallic glasses to artificial atom displacements at increasing deformation degrees. Glasses are shown to contain unstable regions that spontaneously rearrange under deformation.

Double pane windows—elastic deformations, gas thermodynamics, thermal and optical phenomena

European Journal of Physics, 2014
Double pane windows are common objects which can enrich physics teaching at undergraduate level at least in five different fields. First, having sealed inner spaces filled with gas, one can discuss gas law problems upon changes of pressure and/or temperature.

Nonlocal thermal-elasticity for nanobeam deformation: Exact solutions with stiffness enhancement effects

Journal of Applied Physics, 2011
The nanomechanical response for a nanobeam under thermal effects is investigated by using the nonlocal elasticity field theory, which was first proposed by Eringen in the early 1970s. The nonlocal constitutive relation is adopted to determine the strain energy density which considers the history of nonlinear straining with respect to an unstrained ...

Thermal activation of atomic rearrangements in elastically deformed Ni50Zr50 metallic glasses

Materials Chemistry and Physics, 2012
Abstract Elastically deformed metallic glasses were submitted to perturbations consisting of small individual atom displacements. The response, studied by molecular dynamics, pointed out the existence of unstable regions in which displacements induce local rearrangements. The displacement length at which these occur decreases with strain.

Nonlinear Thermal Bending for Shear Deformable Nanobeams Based on Nonlocal Elasticity Theory

International Journal of Aerospace and Lightweight Structures (IJALS) -, 2011
Nonlinear bending of shear deformable nanobeams subject to a temperature field is investigated in this paper based on von Karman type nonlinearity and nonlocal elasticity theory. By using the variational principle approach, new higher-order governing differential equations and the corresponding higher-order boundary conditions both in the transverse ...

Thermal Fracture Resistance of Ceramic Coatings Applied to Metal: I, Elastic Deformation

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1959
A study was made of the resistance to thermal fracture of four ceramic coatings of the cobalt‐bearing ground‐coat type applied to enameling‐grade iron specimens. The study was made of coated‐metal systems in the unsteady state, symmetrically cooled, and in the absence of viscous or plastic flow.

Elastic-plastic analysis of deformation induced by thermal stress in eutectic composites: II. thermal Expansion

Metallurgical transactions, 1974
In part I a theory was developed to analyze the deformation produced in eutectic composites by temperature changes. Experimental determinations of the coefficient of expansion are used here to test the predictions of that theory. Measurements of length versus temperature in the absence of external stresses were made for Al-Al3Ni, Al-CuAl2, and Sb-Cu2Sb

Elastic-plastic analysis of deformation induced by thermal stress in eutectic composites: III. thermal-cycling damage

Metallurgical transactions, 1974
The analytical method of part I is used to calculate the dependence of composite deformation on cyclic, geometric, and constituent deformation parameters. The calculated hysteresis loop of matrix stress versus temperature caused by plastic deformation stabilizes after a few cycles so that a steady-state plastic compression-tension fatigue results when ...
