Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Rough Surfaces

Journal of Tribology, 1990
A numerical solution to the problem of thermal and compressible elastohydrodynamic (EHD) lubrication of rolling/sliding rough surfaces was obtained by neglecting the transient effects. The technique involves the simultaneous solution of thermal Reynolds and modified elasticity equations using the Newton-Raphson technique, and the energy equation using ...

A Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Inlet Zone Analysis

Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1975
An equation which takes account of the effects of viscous heating is used in place of the conventional Reynolds equation in a Grubin style analysis of the elastohydrodynamic inlet zone. The analysis indicates that viscous heating in the inlet zone can result in substantial reduction in the lubricant film thickness.

Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Axially Crowned Rollers

Journal of Tribology, 2021
Abstract This work presents a comprehensive numerical study of thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication performance in axially crowned rollers, based on a full-system finite element approach. Axial crowning has always been introduced to finite line contacts, as a mean for improving film thickness.

Modeling the effects of solid thermal expansion and thermal stress on elastohydrodynamic lubrication

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2022
Temperature has a significant effect on the performance of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL), and this topic has been extensively covered in many studies. These studies are focused on how temperature affects lubrication performance, without considering the effect of temperature on the deformation and the subsurface stress of the contact bodies ...

The role of the thermal conductivity of steel in quantitative elastohydrodynamic friction

Tribology International, 2020
Abstract Numerical models for thermal elastohydrodynamic lubricated contacts of steel surfaces have always employed a value for the thermal conductivity of steel corresponding to its soft annealed alloy state. However, steel in elastohydrodynamic lubricated contacts is usually hardened.

Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Ceramic Materials

Tribology Transactions, 2018
The effect of thermal conductivity on point elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) contacts was discussed with representative engineering ceramics and steel by a non-Newtonian thermal EHL analysis.

Formulas Used in Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Tribology Transactions, 1991
A numerical solution to the problem of thermal compressible elastohydrodynamic lubrication of rolling/sliding contacts has been tested over a wide range of operating parameters consisting of dimensionless load, speed, slip, and material parameters. A least squares exponential curve fit was used to develop simple formulas for the amplitude and location ...

Non-Newtonian Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Journal of Tribology, 1991
A numerical solution to the problem of thermal and non-Newtonian fluid model in elastohydrodynamic lubrication is presented. The generalized Reynolds equation was modified by the Eyring rheology model to incorporate the non-Newtonian effects of the fluid.

A fast, robust, straightforward algorithm for thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication

Tribology International, 1993
Abstract A straightforward computational algorithm is developed for solving thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems in concentrated rolling/sliding line contacts. The algorithm is more efficient for pressure calculation than the conventional Newton-Raphson algorithm, can be used in both micro thermal and non-Newtonian thermal ...
