Two cases of leiomyoma necrosis after thermal balloon endometrial ablation

open access: yesJournal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, 2007
The presence of intramural leiomyomas is not necessarily a contraindication to thermal balloon endometrial ablation, provided there is minimal distortion of the endometrial cavity. We report 2 cases of necrosis of intramural leiomyomas after the procedure.

Thermal Isotherms in PMMA and Cell Necrosis during Total Hip Arthroplasty

open access: yesJournal of Applied Biomaterials and Functional Materials, 2014
Background Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), also known as bone cement, is a commonly used adhesive material to fix implants in Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). During implantation, bone cement undergoes a polymerization reaction which is an exothermic reaction and results in the release of heat to the surrounding ...

Polymethyl Methacrylate Bone Cement Polymerization Induced Thermal Necrosis at the Cement–Bone Interface: A Narrative Review

open access: yesApplied Sciences (Switzerland)
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement has been a transformative material in orthopedics since its introduction in the mid-20th century. Originally used in dental medicine, PMMA was adopted for orthopedic applications by Sir John Charnley in the ...

An overview of thermal necrosis: present and future [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Medical Research and Opinion, 2019
Introduction: Many orthopaedic procedures require drilling of bone, especially fracture repair cases. Bone drilling results in heat generation due to the friction between the bone and the drill bit. A high-level of heat generation kills bone cells. Bone cell death results in resorption of bone around bone screws. Methods: We searched in the literature ...

Thermal inactivation of tobacco necrosis virus

open access: yesVirology, 1963
Abstract The thermal inactivation point of different strains of tobacco necrosis virus (TNV) in infective sap ranged between 85° for strain B and 95° for strains D and E. Determination of inactivation points and results of kinetic experiments place the six strains in the same order of susceptibility to heat.

Machining-induced thermal damage in cortical bone: Necrosis and micro-mechanical integrity

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2021
In bone cutting, the tissue is exposed to necrosis due to temperature elevation, which can significantly influence postoperative results in orthopaedic surgeries.

Mesh Refinement Compensation via Regression in thermal necrosis FEM

open access: yesCurrent Directions in Biomedical Engineering
Finite Element Models (FEM) for simulating various physical phenomena are indispensable in today’s research. They are also applied in high-frequency (HF) surgical applications to simulate Joule heating and thermal necrosis formation in biological tissue.

Numerical model of thermal necrosis due a dental drilling process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
''The main goal of this paper is to present a numerical model for studying the thermal necrosis due a dental drilling process. When cutting tools, as drills, are used to cut a material, heat is produced and temperature increases of both the tool and material. The drilling parameters (drill speed, drill depth, drill diameter, applied load and feed rate)
