The effect of surgical approach on the histology of the femoral head following resurfacing of the hip : analysis of retrieval specimens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Objectives: We aimed to determine the effect of surgical approach on the histology of the femoral head following resurfacing of the hip. Methods: We performed a histological assessment of the bone under the femoral component taken from retrieval ...

Synthesis and characterization of a thermally-responsive tumor necrosis factor antagonist [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Controlled Release, 2008
Numerous antagonists of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) have been developed to attenuate inflammation and accompanying pain in many disease processes. Soluble TNF receptor type II (sTNFRII) is one such antagonist that sequesters TNFalpha away from target receptors and attenuates its activity.

An investigation into thermal necrosis of bone associated with surgical procedures [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on Biomedicine and Health, 2005
We present the results of an investigation into thermal bone damage or necrosis associated with orthopaedic surgical procedures. Thermal necrosis can lead to infections and pin loosening. It is reported that the critical level at which thermal necrosis appears is when the bone is exposed to a temperature of around 56°C over a time of 10 seconds.

Effect of cementing technique and cement type on thermal necrosis in hip resurfacing arthroplasty--a numerical study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Item does not contain fulltextFemoral fractures within resurfacing implants have been associated with bone necrosis, possibly resulting from heat generated by cement polymerization. The amount of heat generated depends on cement mantle volume and type of

The Impact of Mixing Techniques on PMMA Bone Cement Subjected to Two Different Cooling Techniques: A Pilot Study of Thermal Management Strategies in Orthopedic Applications

open access: yesBiomedicines
Objectives: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is vital for prosthetic fixation in orthopedic surgery, yet its exothermic polymerization can exceed 80 °C, surpassing the 50 °C threshold for thermal osteonecrosis, risking implant failure.

Histological assessment of thermal damage in porcine muscle induced by monopolar electrosurgical cutting devices during manual and robotic testing

open access: yesInternational Journal of Hyperthermia
Surgical cutting with electrosurgical tools facilitates tissue dissection and vessel sealing, preventing blood loss. The extent of tissue necrosis due to temperature elevations is dependent on the cutting technique, device design, coating properties and ...

Finite Element Method (FEM) Modeling of Laser-Tissue Interaction during Hair Removal

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
In this study, a comprehensive and realistic model of laser light interaction with skin and hair was constructed. The model was applied to study the characteristics of laser-tissue interaction for the deeply penetrating Nd:YAG laser.

Evaluating drill speed effects on tunnel diameter in ACL reconstruction: Insights from an experimental animal study

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose To determine how drilling speeds affect tunnel enlargement during cruciate ligament reconstruction. Methods Twelve adult female New Zealand rabbits, each weighing between 3 and 3.5 kg, were randomly assigned to two groups based on drilling speeds

Cell death induced on cell cultures and nude mouse skin by non-thermal, nanosecond-pulsed generated plasma. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Non-thermal plasmas are gaseous mixtures of molecules, radicals, and excited species with a small proportion of ions and energetic electrons. Non-thermal plasmas can be generated with any high electro-magnetic field.
