Thermoplasma acidophilum and Thermoplasma volcanium sp. nov. from Solfatara Fields
Systematic and Applied Microbiology, 1988Summary Twenty-three isolates of motile, cell wall-deficient, thermoacidophilic archaebacteria were obtained from hot acidic springs, soils and sediments within solfatara fields in the Azores, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, and the United States. They are facultatively anaerobic organotrophs. Anaerobically, the isolates gain energy by sulfur respiration.

Histone-like protein in the prokaryote Thermoplasma acidophilum

This protein is similar to eukaryotic histones in both size and amino acid composition. Here we report that the protein condenses DNA into globular particles that are about half the size of eukaryotic nucleosomes. Our conclusions

Cytoskeleton in the archaebacterium Thermoplasma acidophilum? Viscosity increase in soluble extracts
Biosystems, 1993Thermoplasma acidophilum has no cell wall, and so its irregular shape implies the presence of a cytoskeleton. When soluble extracts of T. acidophilum were incubated in vitro they increased in viscosity, suggestive of a polymerizable component. Optimal conditions for the viscosity increase coincided with physiological ionic concentrations.

The first transformation method for the thermo-acidophilic archaeon Thermoplasma acidophilum
Journal of Microbiological Methods, 2013A transformation method yielding up to 10(4) transformants per μg circular DNA was developed for Thermoplasma acidophilum. The method is based on a natural DNA uptake process in which T. acidophilum cells keep their integrity and turn competent at pH 3.5 and 58°C.
