Preparation and Evaluation of a Novel Branched Polymer as Thickener for Calcium Chloride-Based Drilling and Completion Fluids

open access: yesMolecules
Calcium halide-based fluids are often used in drilling and completion operations due to their high density, clay inhibition and low solid content. However, there is a lack of thickeners to promote gel strength, which improves the fluid’s capacity to ...

The clot thickens [PDF]

open access: yesKidney International, 2006
Vascular sclerosis has been linked to many risk factors, including smoking, family history, low birth weight, and hypertension. In interesting studies, Goforth et al. show an increased rate of mutations in thrombophilic molecules in patients with vascular sclerosis in renal biopsies, suggesting yet another mechanism.

Biomimetic Iridescent Skin: Robust Prototissues Spontaneously Assembled from Photonic Protocells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Uniform nanoparticles are induced to form arrays (photonic crystals) in the cores of biopolymer capsules, endowing these ‘protocells’ with structural color. These protocells are then assembled into large self‐standing objects, i.e., prototissues, with robust mechanical properties as well as iridescent optical properties.

Sodium Benzoate as Promoter in the Soap Flotation of Phosphate Minerals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In the present study we show that sodium benzoate substantially improves the efficiency of Soap LDO collector in the flotation of phosphate minerals. ...

Electrowetting of a soap bubble

open access: yes, 2013
A proof-of-concept demonstration of the electrowetting-on-dielectric of a sessile soap bubble is reported here. The bubbles are generated using a commercial soap bubble mixture - the surfaces are composed of highly doped, commercial silicon wafers ...

A Bespoke Programmable Interpenetrating Elastomer Network Composite Laryngeal Stent for Expedited Paediatric Laryngotracheal Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A programmable interpenetrating double‐network architecture, created via 3D‐TIPS printing and resin infusion, synergistically combines thermoplastic and thermosetting elastomers to balance structural rigidity and surface softness—crucial for paediatric laryngeal stents.

Cavitation growth phenomena in pure-sliding grease EHD contacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This article describes experimental and theoretical studies on the cavitation phenomena in the grease lubrication film under pure sliding elastohydrodynamic contact. In-situ observation tests using the optical interferometry technique were conducted, and

Tailoring the Properties of Functional Materials With N‐Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The properties of materials bearing N‐oxide groups are often dominated by the polar N+─O− bond. It provides hydrophilicity, selective ion‐binding, electric conductivity, or antifouling properties. Many of the underlying mechanisms have only recently been discovered, and the interest in N‐oxide materials is rapidly growing.
