Third-body wear of highly cross-linked polyethylene in a hip simulator
The Journal of Arthroplasty, 2003The wear performance of a radiation cross-linked melted ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) articulating against 28-mm cobalt chrome femoral heads in the presence of third-body particulate debris was investigated in a hip simulator and compared with the wear of conventional UHMWPE.

Third body effects on friction and wear during fretting of steel contacts
Tribology International, 2011Abstract Fretting wear proceeds through particle detachment from the contacting surfaces which, while trapped in the contact zone, can affect the frictional and wear response. Ball-on-flat fretting experiments were carried out between steel specimens under gross slip regime. A transition in the coefficient of friction was linked to a critical contact

How Third-Body Processes Affect Friction and Wear
MRS Bulletin, 1998Materials designed for rolling or sliding contact, like corrosion-resistant materials, can provide great cost savings to industry. So why can't such “tribomaterials” be designed based on materials properties that control friction and wear? In recent years, it has become clear that the properties we need to understand are not only those of the starting ...

Al2O3–ZrO2 debris life cycle during wear: effects of the third body on wear and friction
Wear, 1997Abstract Wear debris of alumina–zirconia materials generated during wear by abrasion and chipping (ring on disk) were analyzed in order to study their life cycle and their effects on wear and friction. When generated in the contact, wear debris contributed to redistribute the applied load on more contact points and absorbed a part of the energy ...

The role of a third body in fretting wear
2021One of the effects of fretting wear in a concentrated or flat contact is the formation of wear products, the so called "third body". Its role in further wear development is interpreted in different ways. The problem is more complex in the case of clamped joints, especially those made by forcing in. The wear products are formed already

Problematic sites of third body embedment in polyethylene for total hip wear acceleration
Journal of Biomechanics, 2006A computational model was developed to identify the sites of third body particle embedment in a total hip acetabular component surface that are most problematic in terms of roughening the overpassing regions of the femoral head counterface, leading in turn to most severely accelerated polyethylene wear.

Third Body Formation and the Wear of PTFE Fibre-Based Dry Bearings
Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1980Dry bearing tests have been made with a PTFE fibre/glass fibre/phenolic resin composite against stainless steel to examine the influence of time of sliding, counterface roughness and load. The worn surfaces were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA).

Electrochemical control of wear: a third body approach
2003A phenomenological description for tribocorrosion is developed by including electrochemical corrosion aspects into a third body approach. The developed third body approach stresses the relevance of electrochemical phenomena such as dissolution or formation of stable oxides for the overall wear process.

Paper IV (i) Third Bodies in Wear Models
1992Third bodies are present between virtually all practical sliding systems. Third body substances therefore control the sliding resistance and the stresses imposed on surfaces. Their properties should thus be the basis for the formulation of predictive equations for friction and wear.

Development of a Model for Testing Third Body Wear of UHMWPE Acetabular Components
Journal of ASTM International, 2004Abstract The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a new wear test protocol utilizing third body particulate debris in order to assess conventional and highly cross-linked polyethylene components. A series of tests were performed using the Boston Hip Simulator to evaluate different types of particles for possible use ...
