Hepatoma Induced by Thorium Dioxide

A 74-year-old man complained of anorexia and weight loss. Twenty-six years earlier he had received an injection of Thorotrast. A needle biopsy of the liver showed thorium dioxide granules and periportal fibrosis. On laparotomy, a hepatoma of the left lobe of the liver was discovered.

Thorium-thorium dioxide phase equilibria

Various Th-ThO2 mixtures were investigated with thermal analysis, X-ray, and microscopic techniques. The following information on phase boundaries is deduced. The oxygen solubility in solid Th is less than the OTh ratio of 0.003. The solid-solid transition of Th saturated with ThO2 occurs at 1370 ± 30 °C.

Thorium dioxide, a producer of alpha particle radiation, was used in the United States from 1930 to 1950 for carotid and cerebral angiography. Cervical thorium dioxide granuloma is a well-recognized sequela of extravasation of this material near the carotid bifurcation.

Biokinetics and assessment of intake of thorium dioxide

The aim of this work was to investigate the biokinetics of thorium dioxide in animals for the purpose of assessing intakes of the compound by workers and the resulting doses. The results imply that measurements of the decay products in the chest or extrapolations from urine analysis data are unlikely to be of value for doses below 20 mSv.
