The dissolution of bulk crystalline ThO2(cr) is a very slow process and the Th(IV) concentrations measured after one year at pH 1-3 in 0.1 and 0.5M HCl-NaCl solutions do not represent equilibrium data.

Creep of Polycrystalline Thorium Dioxide

The creep rate of polycrystalline thorium dioxide is reported for 1400° to 1800°C and for 4000, 7500, and 11,000 psi. The microstructure of deformed specimens contained intergranular voids which formed by the apparent growth and coalescence of pores along the grain boundaries. Grain‐boundary sliding also occurred during creep.

41. The thorium dioxide–thorium tetrafluoride system

The thorium dioxide --thorium tetrafluoride system has been studied by x- ray diffraction. Thorium tetrafluoride dissolves in thoria to the extent of about 25 mole%, the cell constant a increasing from 5.586 to 5.633 kX. The arrangement of the anions in these mixed crystals is discussed.
