Discontinuous crack fronts of three-dimensional fractures [PDF]

open access: yesEurophysics Letters (EPL), 1998
The relation between fracture surface morphology and the three-dimensional structure of crack fronts is investigated through direct observation of brittle cracks in gels. A key notion in this investigation is the discontinuity of the crack front, whose advancement creates the fracture surface.

Stress analysis near a small crack within singular stress field in a three-dimensional bonded joint under a tensile load

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2014
Stress singularity usually occurs at a vertex of interface in a three-dimensional joint. Crack frequently initiates at a vertex and a joint fails under an external force and a thermal load.

A closed form for the Stress Intensity Factor of a small embedded square-like flaw

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2020
In the present work, the stress intensity factor (SIF) of a small embedded square-like flaw is calculated by means of a procedure based on the Oore-Burns integral.

Stress intensity factor of a penny-shaped crack with small-disturbed crack front line

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2018
In this paper, the stress intensity factor K  for the crack front line α − ε (1 + cosmθ ) , which is slightly perturbed from a complete circular line with a radius of α, is solved.

Probabilistic analysis and simulation of crack propagation in concrete pavements and surfaces

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The surface of concrete pavement is susceptible to cracking. The propagation of a crack in a concrete structure may take the form of a one-dimensional line crack, a two-dimensional surface crack, or a three-dimensional volume crack.

An Eddy Current-Based Structural Health Monitoring Technique for Tracking Bolt Cracking

open access: yesSensors, 2020
Bolted joints are the primary structures for the load transfer of large-scale structures. It is vital to monitor the process of bolt cracking for enduring structural safety.

Weibull stress analysis for the corner crack in reactor pressure vessel nozzle

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2019
The nozzle region of a reactor pressure vessel experiences higher and more complex stresses than the remaining part of the reactor pressure vessel. If a corner crack is postulated in the nozzle region, it is necessary to consider the potential strong ...

An Assessment Method of Sealing Performance and Stress Intensity Factors at Crack Tip of Subsea Connector Metal Sealing Rings

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
Subsea connectors are of a critical part for the sealing of subsea production systems. The working environment makes cracks initiate easily on subsea connector sealing rings.

Experimental study on fatigue cracking in pre-corroded aluminum alloy 2024-T4 via digital image correlation

open access: yesJournal of Aeronautical Materials, 2020
The fatigue cracking behavior in pre-corroded AA2024-T4 associated with three different levels of maximum stresses and stress ratios via three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) was investigated.

Three‐dimensional crack monitoring by electrical resistivity measurement [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Soil Science, 2004
Summary Soil cracks formed by natural processes play a key role in water and gas transfer. Patterns of soil cracks are, however, difficult to characterize. Our aim here is to assess the effectiveness of three‐dimensional electrical resistivity surveys in detecting soil crack networks.
