Effect of energy density on the microstructure and texture evolution of Ti-6Al-4V manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

open access: yesMaterials Characterization, 2020
The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the volumetric energy density (EV) on the microstructure, texture and Vickers hardness of Ti-6Al-4V (wt%) processed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), both in the as-built and heat-treated ...

Nominal material density may not reflect TPS‐relevant density for 3D‐printed surgical reconstruction implants: An educational case study

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 27, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Additively manufactured (3D‐printed) surgical reconstruction implants are increasingly encountered in head and neck oncology and may introduce density assignment challenges during radiotherapy treatment planning. This case report describes a clinically significant dosimetric discrepancy arising from the application of nominal bulk material ...

Effect of the build orientation on the mechanical properties and fracture modes of SLM Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yes, 2014
Recent research on the additive manufacturing (AM) of Ti alloys has shown that the mechanical properties of the parts are affected by the characteristic microstructure that originates from the AM process. To understand the effect of the microstructure on

Strength–Ductility Enhancement in Additively Manufactured Titanium Alloys via Neutral Element‐Mediated Microstructural Control

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT To overcome the challenges of the strength‐ductility trade‐off in laser additively manufactured (LAM) titanium alloys, and to avoid the intragranular microstructure degradation often caused by an exclusive focus on grain equiaxialization, this work proposes a novel strategy of “grain morphology‐intragranular microstructure co‐optimization ...

Eradicating Brittleness of Ti-6Al-4V/Cu Dissimilar Brazed Joint using a Nb Diffusion Barrier [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials
Directly brazing titanium (Ti) alloy and copper (Cu) using silver (Ag) based filler alloy has been recognized to be of limited success owing to the embrittlement of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) presented at joint interface. In the current investigation,

A Hybrid Compliant–Tendon Laparoscopic Instrument for Distal Articulation and Grasping: Design and Experimental Validation

open access: yesThe International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery, Volume 22, Issue 4, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Conventional laparoscopic instruments provide limited dexterity in confined anatomical environments, whereas existing articulated designs rely on complex rigid joints or motorised actuation, increasing mechanical complexity and limiting miniaturisation.

Distinctive transpassivation behavior and characteristics of passive films of laser powder bed fusion produced and annealed Ti–6Al–4V in Hank's solution

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Passivated Ti alloys typically demonstrate enhanced corrosion resistance due to the formation of passive films. Intriguingly, in comparison to the annealed Ti–6Al–4V, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) produced Ti–6Al–4V exhibits significantly attenuated ...

Nanostructured Ti–6Al–4V Reduces Adhesion of Several Bacterial Species: An In Vitro Study

open access: yesSmall Science, Volume 6, Issue 8, August 2026.
Alkaline etching transforms Ti–6Al–4V into nanostructured, highly hydrophilic surfaces with thicker oxide layers and selective alloy depletion. These physicochemical changes reduce early bacterial adhesion across multiple species by limiting effective nanoscale contact points, while osteoblast‐like cells retain good attachment and spreading.

Simulation of Titanium and Titanium Alloy Powder Compact Forging [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Simulation can be divided into two types: physical simulation and interactive numerical simulation. Physical simulation depends on testing smaller or cheaper samples rather than real objects to simplify models; Interactive simulation, which is also been ...
