The development of the PVD coating TiAlN as a commercial coating for cutting tools

Surface and Coatings Technology, 1991
Abstract The properties of TiAlN have been described in numerous scientific publications in recent years. In August 1989, G. Guhring KG offered this coating on commercial cutting tools for the first time. This paper describes the experience to date in the development and production on CC 800 coating plant.

Friction and Wear Behaviors of CAPVD TiAlN Coating

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
The paper reports friction and wear study of TiAlN coating at different speeds and loads. The coating was deposited on YG6 (WC+6 wt.% Co) cemented carbide by cathodic arc physical vapour deposition technique. Ball-on-disc wear tests were performed on the CETR UMT-2 test system against SiC balls.

Multilayered coatings with alternate ZrN and TiAlN superlattices

Applied Physics Letters, 2007
Zr N ∕ Ti Al N multilayers with various modulation periods and ratios were grown by ion beam assisted deposition. The nanoscale multilayered modulation was confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy. All multilayers possess higher hardness than the rule-of-mixture value of monolithic coatings.

Fracture behaviour of nc-TiAlN/a-Si 3 N 4 nanocomposite coating during nanoimpact test

open access: yesSurface Engineering, 2017
Cyclic nanoimpact tests were carried on nc-TiAlN/a-Si3N4 nanocomposite, TiN and multilayered TiN/nanocomposite (NC) coatings to evaluate their resistance to fracture under cyclic impact loads.

Oxidation resistance of TiAlN/ZrN multilayer coatings

Vacuum, 2016
Abstract TiAlN/ZrN multilayered coatings with the modulation ratio (the thickness ratio of sub-layer A and sub-layer B) changing from 1:1 to 1:3 were deposited by multi-arc ion plating technology. Air-annealing at 500 °C and 800 °C were conducted to evaluate the oxidation resistance of the coatings.

Performance of ion plating TiAlN coating on YG8

International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing, 2016
Multi-arc ion plating technology and interactive deposition process are adopted to plate TiAlN hard film on the surface of YG8 cemented carbide cutting tools. Study the influences of the coating film parameters to surface appearance with orthogonal experiment method.

Corrosion behaviour of AlN and TiAlN coatings on iron

Surface and Interface Analysis, 2006
Abstract We have studied the corrosion behaviour of AlN and TiAlN coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering on pure iron substrates. The samples have been subjected to two different corrosion tests: (i) a Prohesion test and (ii) an accelerated corrosion test in constantly humid SO 2

Fatigue life behaviour of TiAlN and TiAlN/CrN coated notched P20 steel specimens

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2015
AbstractThe performance of single layer TiAlN and multilayered TiAlN/CrN physical vapour deposition coatings deposited on AISI P20 steel substrate in affecting overall fatigue resistance of notched specimens was assessed and compared with the performance of the uncoated counterparts.

Effect of duplex nanostructured TiAlSiN/TiSiN/TiAlN-TiAlN and TiAlN-TiAlSiN/TiSiN/TiAlN coatings on the hard turning performance of Al2O3-TiCN ceramic cutting tools

Wear, 2019
Abstract The present work explores the hard turning performance of nanostructured TiAlSiN/TiSiN/TiAlN-TiAlN and TiAlN-TiAlSiN/TiSiN/TiAlN duplex coatings on Al2O3-TiCN ceramic cutting tools. The performance of these coatings has been compared with that of uncoated and TiAlSiN/TiSiN/TiAlN coated cutting tools. The deposition of coatings in duplex form

Raman spectroscopy studies on the thermal stability of TiN, CrN, TiAlN coatings and nanolayered TiN/CrN, TiAlN/CrN multilayer coatings

Journal of Materials Research, 2004
About 1.5-μm-thick single-layer TiN, CrN, TiAlN coatings and nanolayered TiN/CrN, TiAlN/CrN multilayer coatings were deposited on silicon (111) substrates using a reactive direct current magnetron sputtering process. Structural characterization of the coatings was done using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman spectroscopy.
