Internal injuries in whiting (Merlangius merlangus) caught by tickler-chain and pulse-trawl gears
Fisheries Research, 2022Electrical pulse fishing has been widely adopted by Dutch fishers as an economically viable alternative to tickler-chain trawling for common sole (Solea solea) in the North Sea. Concerns exist, however, that the use of electrical pulses may cause spinal injuries and haemorrhages, as previously shown for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Catch comparison of flatfish pulse trawls and a tickler chain beam trawl
Fisheries Research, 2014Abstract Pulse trawling is used to a growing extent in the Dutch flatfish beam trawl fleet, and deemed as a promising alternative to tickler chain beam trawling. A comparative fishing experiment was carried out with one vessel using conventional beam trawls, and the other two using flatfish pulse trawls supplied by two different companies.

Risk for incidental take of sea turtles and sturgeon exists during hopper dredging operations throughout turtle and sturgeon habitats. Since 1992, draghead deflectors have been the main engineering tool used to minimize incidental hopper dredging takes of sea turtles and are also thought to reduce the chance of sturgeon impingement or entrainment ...
