Tidal Novae in Compact Binary White Dwarfs [PDF]
Compact binary white dwarfs (WDs) undergoing orbital decay due to gravitational radiation can experience significant tidal heating prior to merger. In these WDs, the dominant tidal effect involves the excitation of outgoing gravity waves in the inner ...

Tidal dissipation in Europa: A correction [PDF]
The possibility that tidal dissipation in a thin ice crust was sufficient to preserve liquid water on Jupiter's satellite Europa was suggested by Cassen et al. [1979]. However, their calculation of the tidal heating rate for that situation is in error.

Weather Patterns Associated With Coastal Disasters in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil
The study identified weather patterns (WPs) associated with coastal disasters between 1998 and 2020 along the Santa Catarina coast, Brazil. Using atmospheric and oceanographic data combined with official disaster records, five WPs were defined, mainly associated with cyclonic and anticyclonic systems linked to extreme wave events.

Modeling the diurnal tide with dissipation derived from UARS/HRDI measurements [PDF]
This paper uses dissipation values derived from UARS/HRDI observations in a recently published diurnal-tide model. These model structures compare quite well with the UARS/HRDI observations with respect to the annual variation of the diurnal tidal ...

The formation efficiency of close-in planets via Lidov-Kozai migration: analytic calculations
Lidov-Kozai oscillations of planets in stellar binaries, combined with tidal dissipation, can lead to the formation of hot Jupiters (HJs) or tidal disruption of planets.

Elliptical instability of compressible flow in ellipsoids [PDF]
Elliptical instability is due to a parametric resonance of two inertial modes in a fluid velocity field with elliptical streamlines. This flow is a simple model of the motion in a tidally deformed, rotating body. Elliptical instability typically leads to

Parameterizing tidal dissipation over rough topography [PDF]
The traditional model of tidal dissipation is based on a frictional bottom boundary layer, in which the work done by bottom drag is proportional to a drag coefficient and the velocity cubed. However, away from shallow, coastal regions the tidal velocities are small, and the work done by the bottom boundary layer can account for only weak levels of ...

An anatomy of fog over Nova Scotia under a ridge on 8 September 2021
Image from an aircraft traveling eastward at 1230 UTC (0930 Atlantic Daylight Time, ADT) on 8 September 2021. The view is to the southeast over the eastern coast of Nova Scotia. The leading head of the fog bank is in the image with its base on the sea surface.

Lagrangian measurements of turbulent dissipation over a shallow tidal flat from pulse coherent Acoustic Doppler Profilers [PDF]
We present high resolution (25 mm spatial, 8 Hz temporal) profiles of velocity measured over a shallow tidal flat using pulse-coherent Acoustic Doppler Profilers mounted on surface drifters.
