Production of a Fermi gas of atoms in an optical lattice

open access: yes, 2003
We prepare a degenerate Fermi gas of potassium atoms by sympathetic cooling with rubidium atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. In a tight lattice we observe a change of the density of states of the system, which is a signature of quasi two ...

Studies of natural gas production prediction and risk assessment for tight gas in Sichuan Basin

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2023
After a new round of tight gas geological evaluation was launched in 2018, a new chapter of tight gas exploration and development has been opened in the Sichuan Basin.

Characterization Method of Tight Sandstone Reservoir Heterogeneity and Tight Gas Accumulation Mechanism, Jurassic Formation, Sichuan Basin, China

open access: yesGeofluids, 2022
Although significant progress has been made in tight gas exploration and development, there is still a limited understanding of the gas accumulation mechanism in tight formation.

The Economic and Budgetary Effects of Producing Oil and Natural Gas From Shale [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
[Excerpt] Recent advances in combining two drilling techniques, hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, have allowed access to large deposits of shale resources—that is, crude oil and natural gas trapped in shale and certain other dense rock ...

Understanding chemical evolution in resolved galaxies -- I The local star fraction-metallicity relation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This work studies the relation between gas-phase oxygen abundance and stellar-to-gas fraction in nearby galaxies. We first derive the theoretical prediction, and argue that this relation is fundamental, in the sense that it must be verified regardless of

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

A Thermo-Mechanical Coupled Gradient Damage Model for Heterogeneous Rocks Based on the Weibull Distribution

open access: yesEnergies
This study develops a thermo-mechanical damage (TMD) model for predicting damage evolution in heterogeneous rock materials after heat treatment. The TMD model employs a Weibull distribution to characterize the spatial heterogeneity of the mechanical ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

The Tight Sand Reservoir Characteristics and Gas Source in Coal Measures: A Case Study of Typical Areas in China

open access: yesGeofluids, 2022
Interbedded sandstones, shales, and coal seams were formed in marine-continental transitional environments of coal measures, and the gas source of its tight sand gas has been uncertain, which hinders the progress of natural gas exploration.
