Tiling Phosphorene

open access: yesACS Nano, 2014
We present a scheme to categorize the structure of different layered phosphorene allotropes by mapping their non-planar atomic structure onto a two-color 2D triangular tiling pattern. In the buckled structure of a phosphorene monolayer, we assign atoms in "top" positions to dark tiles and atoms in "bottom" positions to light tiles.

BRANE TILINGS

open access: yesInternational Journal of Modern Physics A, 2007
We review and extend the progress made over the past few years in understanding the structure of toric quiver gauge theories; those which are induced on the worldvolume of a stack of D3-branes placed at the tip of a toric Calabi–Yau cone, at an "orbifold point" in Kähler moduli space.

Negative Interactions in Irreversible Self-Assembly

open access: yes, 2010
This paper explores the use of negative (i.e., repulsive) interaction the abstract Tile Assembly Model defined by Winfree. Winfree postulated negative interactions to be physically plausible in his Ph.D.

An information-bearing seed for nucleating algorithmic self-assembly [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Self-assembly creates natural mineral, chemical, and biological structures of great complexity. Often, the same starting materials have the potential to form an infinite variety of distinct structures; information in a seed molecule can determine which ...

Tiling with Small Tiles

open access: yes, 2015
We look at sets of tiles that can tile any region of size greater than 1 on the square grid. This is not the typical tiling question, but relates closely to it and therefore can help solve other tiling problems -- we give an example of this. We also present a result to a more classic tiling question with dominoes and L-shape tiles.
