Self-Affine Tilings with Several Tiles, I

open access: yesApplied and Computational Harmonic Analysis, 1999
A collection \(T_i \subseteq {\mathbb R}^d\), \(i=1, \ldots, M\), together with an expanding \(d\times d\) matrix \(A\), and a collection of sets \(\Gamma_{ij} \subseteq {\mathbb Z}^d\), \(i,j=1, \ldots, M\), is called \textit{self-affine} if \[ AT_i = \bigcup_{j=1}^M (\Gamma_{ij}+T_j), \;\;(i=1, \ldots, M) \] (the sets in the union above are assumed ...

Rhombic Tilings and Primordia Fronts of Phyllotaxis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We introduce and study properties of phyllotactic and rhombic tilings on the cylin- der. These are discrete sets of points that generalize cylindrical lattices.

The Ammann-Beenker tilings revisited

open access: yes, 2012
This paper introduces two tiles whose tilings form a one-parameter family of tilings which can all be seen as digitization of two-dimensional planes in the four-dimensional Euclidean space.

Bioinspired Stabilization of Fluorescent Au@SiO2 Tracers for Multimodal Biological Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a bioinspired stabilization strategy for fluorescent gold‐silica nanoparticles. Inspired by natural biosilica maturation, high‐temperature calcination transforms the silica shells, preventing dissolution in cell culture media and intracellular environments.

Gale-Robinson Sequences and Brane Tilings [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2013
We study variants of Gale-Robinson sequences, as motivated by cluster algebras with principal coefficients. For such cases, we give combinatorial interpretations of cluster variables using brane tilings, as from the physics literature.

Tilings of the Sphere by Edge Congruent Pentagons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We study edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by edge congruent pentagons, under the assumption that there are tiles with all vertices having degree 3. We develop the technique of neighborhood tilings and apply the technique to completely classify edge ...

Energy level statistics of electrons in a 2D quasicrystal

open access: yes, 1994
A numerical study is made of the spectra of a tight-binding hamiltonian on square approximants of the quasiperiodic octagonal tiling. Tilings may be pure or random, with different degrees of phason disorder considered.

An Engineered Living Material With Pro‐Angiogenic Activity Inducible by Near‐Infrared Light

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
NIR‐responsive engineered living materials (ELMs) for controlled angiogenesis: Near‐infrared (800 nm) light activates engineered probiotic bacteria within alginate‐based living materials to secrete a blood vessel‐regenerating protein. The released protein promotes pro‐angiogenic effects in endothelial networks and chick chorioallantoic membranes.

Auxeticity‐by‐Assembly: Interlocking Modular Auxetic Metamaterials with Selectively Activatable AgNW–Graphene Oxide‐EGaIn Composite Interconnects for Scalable Freeform Photovoltaic Modules

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Auxeticity‑by‑Assembly converts freeform photovoltaics from cut‑defined layouts to assembly‑defined systems. Standardized interlocking units generate negative‑Poisson‑ratio, reconfigurable architectures, while hinge regions are wired by selectively activatable AgNW–GO@EGaIn composite interconnects and a folding‑enabled interconnector layer. A decimeter‑

THE CHARACTER OF PLANAR TESSELLATIONS WHICH ARE NOT SIDE-TO-SIDE

open access: yesImage Analysis and Stereology, 2014
This paper studies stationary tessellations and tilings of the plane in which all cells are convex polygons. The focus is on the class of tessellations which are not side-to-side.
