A New Approach for Estimation of Instantaneous Mean Frequency of a Time-Varying Signal

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, 2005
Analysis of nonstationary signals is a challenging task. True nonstationary signal analysis involves monitoring the frequency changes of the signal over time (i.e., monitoring the instantaneous frequency (IF) changes).

Simplified methods of assessing the impact of grid frequency dynamics upon generating plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
The frequency of the national electricity grid is affected by fluctuations in supply and demand, and so continually "judders" in an essentially unpredictable fashion around 50 Hz.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Spectrogram-based assessment of small SNR variations, with application to medical electrodes

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, 2019
In this paper, the problem of detection of small signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) variations in noisy signals is addressed in order to provide an efficient and fast method for detection of faulty electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes which can improve the ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Detrending and the Distributional Properties of U.S. Output Time Series [PDF]

open access: yes
We study the impact of alternative detrending techniques on the distributional properties of U.S. output time series. We detrend GDP and industrial production time series employing first-differencing, Hodrick-Prescott and bandpass filters.

1/f noise from correlations between avalanches in self-organized criticality

open access: yes, 2002
We show that large, slowly driven systems can evolve to a self-organized critical state where long range temporal correlations between bursts or avalanches produce low frequency $1/f^{\alpha}$ noise.

Detecting Quasicrystals with Quadratic Time-Frequency Distributions

open access: yesResults in Mathematics
The usefulness of time-frequency analysis methods in the study of quasicrystals was pointed out in a previous paper, where we proved that a tempered distribution $μ$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$ whose Wigner transform is a measure supported on the cartesian product of two uniformly discrete sets in ${\mathbb R}^d$ is a Fourier quasicrystal.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
