Numerical simulation on the effect of tip clearance size on unsteadiness in tip clearance flow

Journal of Thermal Science, 2008
Unsteadiness of tip clearance flow with three different tip clearance sizes is numerically investigated in this paper. NASA Rotor 67 is chosen as the computational model. It is found that among all the simulated cases, the unsteadiness exists when the size of the tip clearance is equal to or larger than design tip clearance size.

Role of tip injection in desensitizing the compressor to the tip clearance size

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2016
Abstract Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the role of tip injection in desensitizing a transonic compressor rotor to the detrimental effects of tip leakage flow. First, the effects of tip clearance size on the compressor stability and performance are investigated.

Study on Effect of Rotor Vibration on Tip Clearance Variation and Fast Active Control of Tip Clearance

Advanced Materials Research, 2010
The tip clearance flow of axial turbomachines is important for their aerodynamic and maneuver performance. And the tip clearance gap leakage flow is of continuing concern in reducing efficiency losses that occur within turbines. In order to gain significant reductions in emissions and specific fuel consumption as well as dramatic improvements in ...

Effects of Rotor Tip Clearance on Tip Clearance Flow Potentially Leading to NSV in an Axial Compressor

Volume 7: Structures and Dynamics, Parts A and B, 2012
This paper investigates non-synchronous vibration (NSV) mechanism of a high-speed axial compressor with three different rotor tip clearances. Numerical simulations for 1/7th annulus periodic sector are performed using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS) solver with a fully conservative sliding boundary condition to capture wake ...

Tip Clearance Flows in Turbine Cascades

open access: yesChinese Journal of Aeronautics, 2008
AbstractThis article describes the effects of some factors on the tip clearance flow in axial linear turbine cascades. The measurements of the total pressure loss coefficient are made at the cascade outlets by using a five-hole probe at exit Mach numbers of 0.10, 0.14 and 0.19.

Periodic Unsteady Tip Clearance Vortex Development in a Low-Speed Axial Research Compressor at Different Tip Clearances

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2017
Since the early work on axial compressors, the penalties due to radial clearances between blades and side walls are known and are an ongoing focus of research work. The periodic unsteadiness of the tip clearance vortex (TCV), due to its interaction with the stator wakes, has only rarely been addressed in research papers so far.

Tip Clearance and Tip Vortex Cavitation in an Axial Flow Pump

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1997
A combined study of tip clearance and tip vortex cavitations in a pump-type rotating machine is presented. Cavitation patterns are observed and cavitation inception is determined for various gap heights, clearance and blade geometries, and rotor operating conditions.

Optimization Design of Tip Clearance Shape

2008 International Conference on Apperceiving Computing and Intelligence Analysis, 2008
The background is one aero-engine's structure. The shape of turbine tip clearance is researched, by the means of numerical analysis. Parametric modeling, process integration, and optimization of tip clearance shape were proposed. The detailed information of flow field shows that the numerical results agree well with experiment data.

Tip-Clearance Effects in Centrifugal Pumps

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1965
Several design models of centrifugal pump impellers were tested in water to determine tip-clearance effects on noncavitating and cavitating performance. Although most of these impellers were designed without tip shrouds, three direct comparisons for shrouded versus unshrouded models are included.

Turbine Tip-Clearance Measurement.

1977
Abstract : This report describes the analysis and measurement of turbine tip clearance over the full range of operation of an advanced gas turbine engine. The first-stage turbine of the Lycoming advanced gas generator was used as the test vehicle for analytic and experimental evaluation. Tip-clearance response of the stage was analyzed for steady-state
