Genotoxicity of tobacco smoke and tobacco smoke condensate
Mutation Research/Reviews in Genetic Toxicology, 1983This report reviews the literature on the genotoxicity of mainstream tobacco smoke and cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) published since 1985. CSC is genotoxic in nearly all systems in which it has been tested, with the base/neutral fractions being the most mutagenic.

Abstract The pH of tobacco smoke is a determining factor in its acute toxicity. With a rise in pH above 6·2, the smoke contains increasing amounts of unprotonated nicotine, the most toxic form of this agent. The pH was determined by puffing smoke over a highly sensitive combination electrode. Measured were the pH of the total mainstream smoke of some

Tobacco: Promotion and Smoking
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1992To the Editor. —Thank you for the December 11, 1991, issue devoted to smoking.
