An alternative Ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) method
NDT and E International, 2018Abstract In this work an alternative TOFD method is presented, capable to detect and size defects in the inspected material with good precision. It was shown that the diffraction used in this technique is the most relevant signal among the longitudinal backwall and the shear backwall echoes, compared to other TOFD methods.

Wave propagation in an austenitic stainless steel specimen with a slit open to the lower surface is modeled using finite element method, with consideration of the effects of scattering at grain boundaries. The distribution of energy of a diffracted longitudinal wave shows that this wave has the strongest energy directly above the slit. As a consequence

Mathematical morphology for TOFD image analysis and automatic crack detection
Ultrasonics, 2014The aim of this work is to automate the interpretation of ultrasonic images during the non-destructive testing (NDT) technique called time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) to aid in decision making. In this paper, the mathematical morphology approach is used to extract relevant pixels corresponding to the presence of a discontinuity, and a pattern ...

The Use of TOFD for Enhancement of HDPE Pipe Fusion Inspection
Volume 4: Codes, Standards, Licensing and Regulatory Issues; Student Paper Competition, 2009HDPE piping has been historically used in place of steels in petrochemical, power, and mining industries to mitigate corrosion and erosion issues. Additionally as HDPE pipe is resistant to Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) and fouling, it appears to be a perfect fit for nuclear safety related cooling water applications. To this end, HDPE was

Applicability of Referent Blocks for TOFD Methods
1997TOFD is to be applied for flaw sizing and characterization whenever it is possible, having essential advantage over conventional UT methods and accuracy much higher than the other UT methods. The primary application starting point is to demonstrate the capability of chosen UT system to be adjusted for TOFD in reproducible way.

Analysis the Results of TOFD Inspection in Butt Joint Welds
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012In the application of the TOFD inspection method, the analysis of test results is the focus and aporia of the study. TOFD image analysis include: analysis of defect size, location analysis and defect map features. In order to increase people's understanding of the TOFD technique, given butt joint welds TOFD and RT detect.

FEM Analyses of the TOFD Technique in Unequal Thickness Component
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014The time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) technique is a new ultrasonic nondestructive testing method. It utilize the longitudinal diffraction signal that generated from the defects, we can confirm whether there is a discontinuity in butt weld by the analysis of diffracted waves.

L51815 The Development of a TOFD Image Reference Collection
1997The Time Of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Technique is rapidly gaining importance as a reliable NDT technique for weld inspection, capable of both detection and sizing of defects. The acquisition of TOFD inspection data is fast and straightforward; the crucial step in inspection reliability is therefore its interpretation. A reliable interpretation of TOFD
