Comparative analysis of TOFD detection technology and phased array detection technology

International Conference on Testing Technology and Automation Engineering, 2022
In order to ensure the welding quality of the butt weld of the supercritical unit pipeline, ultrasonic testing is often used as a nondestructive testing method for the quality evaluation of the butt weld.In this paper, phased array testing technology ...

Three-dimensional reconstruction of transverse hole defect in plate based on TOFD inspection

Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation
In this paper, aluminium plate specimens with circular transverse hole defect was prepared, and the specimen was subjected to ultrasonic non-destructive testing using the TOFD (Time-of-Flight Diffraction) inspection method. Simultaneously, addressing the

Ultrasonic TOFD Detection by Finite Element Simulation Method

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
This paper investigated the ultrasonic mechanism of Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) by finite element analysis for the better applications of ultrasonic TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) detection technology. The welding steel plate with the artificial defects is used in the finite element analysis model.

Mathematical morphology for TOFD image analysis and automatic crack detection

Ultrasonics, 2014
The aim of this work is to automate the interpretation of ultrasonic images during the non-destructive testing (NDT) technique called time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) to aid in decision making. In this paper, the mathematical morphology approach is used to extract relevant pixels corresponding to the presence of a discontinuity, and a pattern ...

An alternative Ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) method

NDT & E International, 2018
Abstract In this work an alternative TOFD method is presented, capable to detect and size defects in the inspected material with good precision. It was shown that the diffraction used in this technique is the most relevant signal among the longitudinal backwall and the shear backwall echoes, compared to other TOFD methods.

Shear-wave time of flight diffraction (S-TOFD) technique

NDT & E International, 2006
Ultrasonic time of flight diffraction (TOFD) for sizing defects is based on the time of flight of the diffracted echo that is generated when a longitudinal wave is incident on a crack tip. This technique has the limitation during near-surface inspection due to signal superposition.

Crack Measurement in Steel Plates Using TOFD Method

Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, 2000
In this study, the ultrasonic time of flight diffraction (TOFD) method to locate and size flaws in steel members was evaluated. This was done by measuring the location and depth of flaws implanted in steel plate specimens and of a fatigue crack in the flange of a full-scale steel plate girder.

Weld crack testing method using ultrasonic TOFD technique

Insight - Non-Destructive Testing and Condition Monitoring, 2010
In this paper, both the forward and inverse problems of crack testing using the ultrasonic time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) B-scan mode are studied. For the forward problem, the propagation behaviour of the ultrasonic beam is described and the electrical and electromechanical elements of the inspection system are characterised using a system ...
