Segmenting hydrogen‐induced cracking defects in steel through scanning acoustic microscopy and deep neural networks

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 6, Issue 12, December 2024.
This research employs the YOLOv8‐seg deep learning model to identify and segment hydrogen‐induced cracking (HIC) in steel through B‐scan images obtained via Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM), achieving a mean Average Precision (mAP) score better than 0.95.

A multimodal expert system for the intelligent monitoring and maintenance of transformers enhanced by multimodal language large model fine‐tuning and digital twins

open access: yesIET Collaborative Intelligent Manufacturing, Volume 6, Issue 4, December 2024.
(1) An intelligent monitoring and maintenance digital twin multimodal expert reasoning system, fine‐tuned on visual language‐based large models, is proposed. (2) This system not only achieves real‐time monitoring of the transformer's operational status but also generates maintenance strategies intelligently based on operational conditions.

Scale‐ and Variable‐Dependent Localization for 3DEnVar Data Assimilation in the Rapid Refresh Forecast System

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 16, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract This study demonstrates the advantages of scale‐ and variable‐dependent localization (SDL and VDL) on three‐dimensional ensemble variational data assimilation of the hourly‐updated high‐resolution regional forecast system, the Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS).

Orographic gravity‐wave drag over multiple bell‐shaped mountains

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 150, Issue 761, Page 2397-2417, April 2024 Part B.
Mountains exert a drag on the atmospheric flow through breaking gravity waves, known as orographic gravity‐wave drag (OGWD). We derive OGWD analytically for multiple three‐dimensional bell‐shaped mountains, while previous studies have derived OGWD for a single mountain. We take into account the geometric overlap between the mountains, vertical shear of

ECMWF and UK Met Office Offshore Blowing Winds: Impact of Horizontal Resolution and Coastal Orography

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 129, Issue 6, 28 March 2024.
Abstract We analyze the performance of the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and UK Met Office (UKMO) meteorological models in predicting offshore blowing wind in coastal areas. Our attention is mainly on the Mediterranean coast, up to 200 km distance from the shore. We compare forecast neutral winds with Advanced Scatterometer

Research on the capacity cost allocation and the electricity capacity price optimization method for a power system based on the BARY‐GA algorithm

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 12, Issue 1, Page 168-180, January 2024.
Description: This work studied and proposed a mechanism for the formation of capacity and electricity prices based on the proportion of allowed income and fixed costs at different voltage levels. The genetic algorithm (GA) has been proposed to calculate the electricity capacity price and electricity quantity's electricity price at all levels of load ...

Sizing of surface-breaking cracks in complex geometry components by ultrasonic Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) technique

open access: yes, 2007
Sizing a surface-breaking crack in a complex geometry component, for example a steam turbine's solid rotor shaft, is a challenging inspection task.
