Variable Rate Irrigation: A Long‐Term Simulated and Field Data Analyses of Irrigation Practices, Field Variability, Economic Feasibility and Profitability

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Long‐term economic analyses of variable rate irrigation (VRI) strategies were performed compared with uniform irrigation management (UIM) in a reference production field using the AquaCrop model. Five strategies to trigger irrigation were as follows: (Field Capacity‐VRI, Driest Soil Trigger‐VRI, Water Mining‐VRI, Conventional Uniform ...

Plant biostimulants and their potential role in achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Plant biostimulants are substances that are obtained from a variety of sources and are applied in minute quantities to enhance plant growth and vigor. In this review we detail how the use of plant biostimulants may contribute to efforts to achieving a number of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Breeding for multi‐stress resilience in crops: Myth or possibility?

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate change threatens millions of farmers worldwide by exposing crops to multiple concurrent or sequential environmental stresses such as drought, heat, waterlogging, and diseases. Although crops have long been selected under naturally occurring multi‐stress conditions, breeding pipelines largely focus on optimal or single‐stress environments ...

Sustainable strategies for the management of tomato leaf miner (Phthorimaea absoluta) (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Ethiopia

open access: yesDiscover Applied Sciences
The tomato leaf miner (Phthorimaea absoluta) (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a devastating pest of tomatoes in Africa, Asia and Europe and South America. It is believed that the tomato leaf miner entered Ethiopia in 2012 through the northern part

Stenomesius japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae): a new parasitoid of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Syria [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Insect Biodiversity and Systematics, 2022
View on Scopus Stenomesius japonicus (Ashmead, 1904) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was collected for the first time from larvae of the tomato leaf-miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) infesting Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.

Endophytic fungi for biological control of whitefly and tomato leaf miner in Tanzania

open access: yesAfrican Crop Science Journal, 2020
Tomato whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) and leaf miners (Tuta absoluta) are devastating pests of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). Pest management using broad spectrum synthetic pesticides is discouraged due to harmful effects on human health and the environment.

From wild to tamed: Reimagining novel crops through omics and local plant diversity

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The global food system faces growing pressure from climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising nutritional demands. Agriculture has increased yields but reduced crop diversity, flavor, and nutritional quality, leaving societies vulnerable and dependent on a narrow set of staple species.

Biological control of Tuta absoluta (Tomato leaf miner) with Necremnus tutae in greenhouses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Tuta absoluta (Tomato leaf miner) is a threat to the tomato production worldwide, as Tuta is resistant to most insecticides. In this video, Eduardo Crisol and Jan van der Blom from Coexphal explain how Tuta can be successfully controlled by a natural ...

How does leaf age affect performance? A comparative study of essential oils from young and mature Eucalyptus globulus leaves in crop protection

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Leaf age influences metabolomic profiling but not bioactivity of Eucalyptus globulus essential oils. Leaf age affects volatile levels of young and adult E. globulus oils, but not their bioactivity. Young leaf essential oil had higher contents of α‐ and β‐pinene. AEEO had higher levels of 1,8‐cineole and trans‐pinocarveol.
