New testing method for the evaluation of topographical gradients of varying strength

open access: yesPhysics of Fluids, 2023
Passive gradient motion found in nature is becoming a point of interest for heat exchange and green energy technologies. Surfaces with a topographical gradient could potentially enhance heat exchanger performance, promote dropwise vs filmwise condensation, or delay icing on wind turbines by assisting in the removal of condensed or impacted droplets ...

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...

Rostrocaudal polarity of the tectum in birds:correlation of en gradient and topographic order in retinotectal projection

open access: yes, 1992
Rostrocaudal polarity of the tectum is first detectable at embryonic day 2 (E2) in the chick by the rostrocaudal gradient of en expression. When ectopic tectum is produced by heterotopic transplantation at E2 in the diencephalon, the gradient of en ...

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.

Deformation induced topographic effects in inversion of temporal gravity changes: First look at Free Air and Bouguer terms

open access: yesContributions to Geophysics and Geodesy, 2015
We review here the gravitational effects on the temporal (time-lapse) gravity changes induced by the surface deformation (vertical displacements). We focus on two terms, one induced by the displacement of the benchmark (gravity station) in the ambient ...

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Multi-Scenario Prediction of Dynamic Responses of the Carbon Sink Potential in Land Use/Land Cover Change in Areas with Steep Slopes

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Terrestrial ecosystems are vital carbon sinks that can effectively restrain the rise in CO2 in the atmosphere. How ecosystem carbon storage (CS) in semi-arid watershed areas with slow urbanization is affected by comprehensive factors of the environment ...

Topographic position, but not slope aspect, drives the dominance of functional strategies of tropical dry forest trees

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2017
In seasonal plant communities, it is recognized that topography-related variation in water availability and solar radiation determine vegetation structure and community composition; however, the effects on functional structure, particularly through ...

Incorporating the effects of topographic amplification in the analysis of earthquake-induced landslide hazards using logistic regression [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2010
Seismic-induced landslide hazards are studied using seismic shaking intensity based on the topographic amplification effect. The estimation of the topographic effect includes the theoretical topographic amplification factors and the corresponding ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.
