Relating extent of colluvial soils to topographic derivatives and soil variables in a Luvisol sub-catchment, Central Bohemia, Czech Republic

open access: yesSoil and Water Research, 2014
Colluvial soils, resulting from accelerated soil erosion, represent a significant part of the soil cover pattern in agricultural landscapes. Their specific terrain position makes it possible to map them using geostatistics and digital terrain modelling ...

Prediction of Surface Topography Parameters in Direct Laser Interference Patterning of Stainless Steel Using Infrared Monitoring and Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents an infrared monitoring approach for direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) combined with a convolutional neural network (CNN). Thermal emission data captured during structuring are used to predict surface topography parameters.

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Google Earth Engine, Open-Access Satellite Data, and Machine Learning in Support of Large-Area Probabilistic Wetland Mapping

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2017
Modern advances in cloud computing and machine-leaning algorithms are shifting the manner in which Earth-observation (EO) data are used for environmental monitoring, particularly as we settle into the era of free, open-access satellite data streams ...

Spatial prediction of groundwater potential by various novel boosting-based ensemble learning models in mountainous areas

open access: yesGeocarto International, 2023
This study makes a significant contribution to the field of groundwater potential mapping (GWPM) by exploring the application of ensemble learning models (ELMs), specifically boosting ensemble models (BEMs), which have not been fully utilized in GWPM. By

Hydrological Connectivity - a study into representative metrics for a humid temperate catchment in northern England. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Hydrological connectivity has been identified as a concept which can help hydrology move towards a hydrological approach focussing on homogeneity rather than difference.

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...
