Grain-boundary topological phase transitions [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2020
Significance We reveal the existence of a topological phase transition (Kosterlitz–Thouless type) in grain boundaries (GBs)—important internal surfaces in crystalline materials. GB dynamics are controlled by the formation/migration of line defects (disconnections) with dislocation and step character. Below the GB KT transition, disconnections

Bandgap-assisted quantum control of topological edge states in a cavity

open access: yesPhysical Review Research, 2020
Quantum matter with exotic topological order has potential applications in quantum computation. However, in present experiments, the manipulations on topological states are still challenging.

Topology and Phase Transitions: Paradigmatic Evidence [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2000
We report upon the numerical computation of the Euler characteristic χ(a topologic invariant) of the equipotential hypersurfaces Σ_v of the configuration space of the two-dimensional lattice $ϕ^4$ model. The pattern χ(Σ_v) vs. v (potential energy) reveals that a major topology change in the family {Σ_v}_{v\in R} is at the origin of the phase transition

Actively Controlling the Topological Transition of Dispersion Based on Electrically Controllable Metamaterials

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
Topological transition of the iso-frequency contour (IFC) from a closed ellipsoid to an open hyperboloid provides unique capabilities for controlling the propagation of light.

Evidence of hyperdimensional topological defects in a ferroelectric supercrystal phase-transition

open access: yes, 2021
We perform real-time stereoscopic wide-area imaging of a ferroelectric phase-transition in KTN:Li. Spontaneous polarization is observed to form a thermally hysteretic 3D lattice of mutually interlinked closed-flux patterns that spans the entire sample ...

Exploring topological phase transition in Pt2Hg1−xTlxSe3

open access: yes, 2023
The transition from trivial to non-trivial phase in two-dimensional materials are called a topological phase transition (TPT). The Berry phase, non-local string order parameter, and edge states define the topological nature of the system.

Loss-Driven Topological Transitions in Lasing

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2022
We experimentally observe lasing in a hexamer plasmonic lattice and find that when tuning the scale of the unit cell, the polarization winding of the emission changes. By a theoretical analysis we identify the lasing modes as quasi bound states in continuum (quasi-BICs) of topological charges of zero, one or two.

Spin pumping in ferromagnet-topological insulator-ferromagnetheterostructures

open access: yes, 2015
Topological insulators (TIs) are enticing prospects for the future of spintronics due to their large spin-orbit coupling and dissipationless, counter-propagating conduction channels in the surface state.

Systematic study on stanene bulk states and the edge states of its zigzag nanoribbon

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2017
Stanene, as a counterpart of graphene, but with much larger spin–orbit coupling (SOC) strength, has recently been synthesized experimentally. Based on first principle calculations and an effective model, we systematically study the electronic and ...
