Supercells and Tornado‐Like Vortices in an Idealized Global Atmosphere Model

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
We investigate the representation of individual supercells and intriguing tornado‐like vortices in a simplified, locally refined global atmosphere model.

Computer Modeling of Tornado Forces on a Cubic Building Using Large Eddy Simulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
A tornado changes its wind speed and direction rapidly; therefore, it is difficult to study the effects of a tornado on buildings in a wind tunnel. The status of the tornado-structure interaction and various models of the tornado wind field found in ...

Spectrally Tunable 2D Material‐Based Infrared Photodetectors for Intelligent Optoelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Intelligent optoelectronics through spectral engineering of 2D material‐based infrared photodetectors. Abstract The evolution of intelligent optoelectronic systems is driven by artificial intelligence (AI). However, their practical realization hinges on the ability to dynamically capture and process optical signals across a broad infrared (IR) spectrum.

The Eye of the Tornado - an isolated, high mass young stellar object near the Galactic centre

open access: yes, 2003
We present infrared (AAT, UKIRT) and radio (VLA, SEST) observations of the Eye of the Tornado, a compact source apparently near the head of the Tornado Nebula.

Melt Grafting of Geometry‐Tailored Voltage Stabilizers for High‐Performance Polypropylene Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A scalable one‐step melt grafting strategy is developed to enhance the dielectric properties of isotactic polypropylene by covalently incorporating thermally stable aromatic voltage stabilizers. This solvent‐free approach improves volume resistivity and DC breakdown strength through deep trap formation and charge localization, offering a sustainable ...

Hunt for the Supertwister [PDF]

open access: yes
In this activity students try to identify the best time of year and place to position spotters to see possible tornado outbreaks. In order to do so they study a graphic that depicts the mean number of days per century with at least one F2 or greater ...

Selective Charge Injection via Topological van der Waals Contacts for Barrier‐Free p‐Type TMD Transistors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Topological van der Waals contacts represent a new class of electrodes for 2D semiconductors, enabling precise control of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) and contact resistance (RC) through interlayer distance and orbital hybridization engineering. In Se‐based transition metal dichalcogenides, these contacts achieve an ultralow SBH of 7 meV, RC of 0.

Controlled Movement of Soft Actuators using Multi‐Responsive Microgel Arrays and Microcirculatory Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Microscale hydrogels (microgels) feature improved mass transport characteristics supportive of fast actuation and chemical tunability amenable to programmed stimuli response. A unique soft actuator architecture is realized by encapsulating microgels in soft microcirculatory systems which enable the convenient delivery of liquid stimuli for powering and

Proposed characterization of tornadoes and hurricanes by area and intensity [PDF]

open access: yes
Results of the 1968 through 1970 Tornado Watch Experiment conducted jointly by NASA and NOAA suggested the necessity of characterizing individual tornadoes in order to improve the identity of tornado-producing nephsystems. An attempt was made, therefore,
