Bifurcations of Convection States in Toroidal Shells

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1988
Summary: In a previous work [Phys. Rev. A (3) 33, 4326-4333 (1986)] the authors studied a fluid-filled horizontal annulus formed by two coaxial circular cylinders of nearly equal radii that is subjected to a vertical temperature gradient. Here the geometry is modified and a very large horizontal torus that is the result of the bending of the ...

Defect unbinding on a toroidal nematic shell

Soft Matter, 2015
We study nematic liquid crystal textures exhibiting topological defects (TDs) on a two-dimensional (2D) toroidal shell. For the toroidal topology the total topological charge of TDs is equal to zero. We use a mesoscopic Landau-de Gennes approach which features a 2D nematic order tensor Q. We show that fat tori unbind TDs.

Toroidal shell electroacoustic transducer

Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics
The design and modeling of an electroacoustic toroidal-hollow-shell transducer for underwater acoustics are considered. Radiation from a solid toroid was considered by Sherman and Parke (JASA 38, 1965) and is useful as an approximation for the radiation of a short cylinder.

Toroidal-Shell Expansion Joints

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1953
Abstract The problem considered in this paper is shown in Fig. 1; a thin toroidal shell of center-line radius a and torus mid-surface radius b is slit at its inner edge and welded to relatively stiff cylindrical pipe sections to form an expansion joint. Stresses and axial deformation under the axial load P are desired.

Bending Behavior of Toroidal Shells

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1968
Axisymmetric stresses and deformations of an arbitrary toroidal sector of uniform thickness under both edge loads and uniform internal pressure were obtained by a numerical procedure. Solutions were generated using a transformation to the Reissner-Meissner governing differential equations to eliminate singularities at the crown of the toroid.

On the Theory of Thin Elastic Toroidal Shells

Journal of Mathematics and Physics, 1950

Equatorial bending of an elliptic toroidal shell

Thin-Walled Structures, 2015
Abstract The exact differential equations for the axisymmetric bending of elliptic toroidal shells are difficult to solve. In this paper, and by considering a semi-elliptic toroid, we present an approximate bending solution that is valid in regions adjacent to the horizontal equatorial plane.
