Local loads on a toroidal shell

The Journal of Strain Analysis for Engineering Design, 1992
In this study the effect of local loads applied on a sectorial toroidal shell (pipe bend) is considered. A linear elastic shell theory solution for local loads is first outlined. The solution corresponds to the case of a shell simply supported at the two ends.

An intelligent shell for the toroidal pinch

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1989
Reversed field pinches are conventionally stabilized by surrounding the plasma with a thick metallic shell. This suppresses flux penetration but only for times shorter than the shell's resistive diffusion time. To improve on this the author proposes replacing the thick shell with an intelligent shell which provides active flux freezing on much longer ...

An experimental investigation of the buckling of toroidal shells

AIAA Journal, 1969
Abstract : Theoretical results for the buckling of toroidal shells under uniform external pressure are presented by Sobel and Flugge. These results are in very good agreement with the few available test results. (Author)

Gas molding of toroidal tank shells

Science intensive technologies in mechanical engineering, 2022
The process flow diagram and ratios for calculating the modes of molding torodial tank shells by gas pressure are de-scribed. The work material is assumed to be anisotropic, exhibiting viscous properties (creep flow) under conditions of hot working. The Laplace equilibrium equation is used to calculate gas pressure.

Magnetic field of two toroidal shells

Journal of Applied Physics, 1976
In this paper we investigate the magnetic field of two toroidal shells lying symmetrically on a torus and carrying a steady current. Throughout the work allowances are made for variable current density.

Static-Dynamic Analyses of Toroidal Shells

Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2000
A corotational approach is used to analyze toroidal shells under static-dynamic loading. This approach decomposes the deformation into stretches and rigid-body rotations, examining the deformed state with respect to an orthogonal rigidly translated and rotated triad located at the point of interest on the deformed structure.

Flexible shell-theory and buckling of toroidal shells and tubes

Ingenieur-Archiv, 1978
Flexible shells, designed to sustain elastic displacements, have a “semimembrane” type of deformation, described by simplified equations. In what follows, flexible shell equations are derived and used to analyse bending of curved tubes and buckling of tubes and toroidal shells under external pressure, as interdependent problems.

Dynamic stiffness analysis of toroidal shells

Thin-Walled Structures, 1995
Abstract The free vibration of a toroidal shell is studied using the dynamic stiffness method. The dynamic stiffness method eliminates both spatial discretization error and mesh generation. Moreover, with a finite number of degrees of freedom, the dynamic stiffness method can predict an infinite number of natural frequencies.

Plastic Bifurcation Buckling of Toroidal Shells

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1979
The buckling characteristics of shells with double curvature is an important design consideration of such structures. Aircraft structural components are commonly of the double curvature type. Classical elastic buckling of toroidal shell segments with positive and negative Gaussian curvatures under pressure loading is given by Stein and McElmann.
