On type-I migration near opacity transitions. A generalized Lindblad torque formula for planetary population synthesis

open access: yes, 2012
We give an expression for the Lindblad torque acting on a low-mass planet embedded in a protoplanetary disk that is valid even at locations where the surface density or temperature profile cannot be approximated by a power law, such as an opacity ...

Planet-Disk interaction in 3D: the importance of buoyancy waves

open access: yes, 2012
We carry out local three dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic simulations of planet-disk interaction in stratified disks with varied thermodynamic properties.

Optimal Magnetic Spring for Compliant Actuation—Validated Torque Density Benchmark [PDF]

open access: yesActuators, 2019
Magnetic springs are a fatigue-free alternative to mechanical springs that could enable compliant actuation concepts in highly dynamic industrial applications. The goals of this article are: (1) to develop and validate a methodology for the optimal design of a magnetic spring and (2) to benchmark the magnetic springs at the component level against ...

Simultaneous improvement of cogging torque and torque density in axial flux‐switching permanent magnet motor

open access: yesIET Electric Power Applications, 2023
Abstract Axial Flux‐Switching Permanent Magnet motors are broadly used in various industrial applications due to their high torque density and low rotor inertia. However, one major drawback of these motors is their cogging torque, which results in torque ripple and vibration. Existing methods for reducing cogging torque have often led

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Spin-orbit torque in completely compensated synthetic antiferromagnet

open access: yes, 2018
Synthetic antiferromagnets (SAF) have been proposed to replace ferromagnets in magnetic memory devices to reduce the stray field, increase the storage density and improve the thermal stability.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

CoB/Ni-Based Multilayer Nanowire with High-Speed Domain Wall Motion under Low Current Control

open access: yes, 2012
The spin-transfer torque motion of magnetic domain walls (DWs) in a CoB/Ni-based nanowire driven by a low current density of (1.12\pm0.8)\times10^{11} A m^{-2} has been observed indirectly by magnetotransport measurements.

Diffusive spin dynamics in ferromagnetic thin films with a Rashba interaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In a ferromagnetic metal layer, the coupled charge and spin diffusion equations are obtained in the presence of both Rashba spin-orbit interaction and magnetism.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.
