Torsional shear wave transducer
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1995A low frequency torsional transducer for the generation and/or reception of shear waves in a substantially solid medium. The transducer includes a spool like radiating structure to which are fixedly attached spaced piezoelectric elements. The elements undergo shear movement upon being electrically excited or upon receiving shear waves.

PROPAGATION OF TORSIONAL SURFACE WAVES IN VISCOELASTIC MEDIUM
International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 1996Summary: It is well known that an elastic homogeneous half-space does not allow torsional surface waves to propagate. The present paper attempts to find out the possibility of propagation of such waves in a viscoelastic half-space. The study reveals that although the homogeneous elastic half-space does not allow torsional surface waves to propagate, a ...

Torsional waves in a viscoelastic layer
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1999The objectives of this study are first to examine experimentally the propagation of torsional waves in a viscoelastic material, and second to use these data to determine the complex shear modulus of the material. The viscoelastic material used in this study is neoprene rubber.

Nonlinear torsional waves in a rod
Bulletin of the Lebedev Physics Institute, 2009Elastic nonlinear torsional waves in a rod were studied in the second approximation. It was shown that the nonlinear correction to the classical linear solution is a combination of longitudinal standing, longitudinal traveling, and transverse traveling waves.

Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in Circular Rods in Torsion
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1963Abstract Invariance considerations are employed to write down constitutive equations governing the propagation of electromagnetic waves in isotropic materials with a centre of symmetry which are subject to a static deformation. It is assumed that the dielectric displacement and magnetic induction vectors are linear functions of the ...

Making waves: A classroom torsional wave machine (Part I)
The Physics Teacher, 1998We present a recipe for constructing a torsional wave machine and discuss its role as a teaching aid, developing the physics of design and operation as we go along. In this article, which forms the first installment of a two-part paper, we cover the dynamics of the wave machine, concluding with construction details of a machine with theatre-scale ...

Dispersion of waves in porous cylinders with patchy saturation: Formulation and torsional waves
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2005Laboratory experiments on wave propagation through saturated and partially saturated porous media have often been conducted on porous cylinders that were initially fully saturated and then allowed to dry while continuing to acquire data on the wave behavior.

Torsional Waves in Composite Rods
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1965The propagation of torsional waves in composite, infinitely long, tractionfree, circular, cylindrical rods is investigated on the basis of the three-dimensional linear theory of elasticity. The composite rods consist of an internal circular rod made of one material, bounded by and bonded to a circular casing made of another material.

Torsional Wave Sensor—A Theory
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1986Experimental observations suggest that the speed of propagation of torsional waves in a solid, elastic wave guide with a noncircular cross section is inversely proportional to the density of the fluid adjacent to the waveguide. Thus, by measuring the speed of propagation of the torsional wave, one can infer the density of the fluid.
