Torsional vibrations and dispersion of torsional waves in orthotropic composite rods

Mechanics of Composite Materials, 2008
The Barr’s refined theory of torsional vibrations of isotropic rods of noncircular cross section is generalized for an orthotropic material. An analysis of natural frequencies of torsional vibration of free-free orthotropic prismatic rods of rectangular cross section is carried out with the help of an exact solution of the frequency equation.

Previously we have studied the scattering of torsional waves in circular rods with a free surface when the rod diameter is subject to abrupt diameter changes. Here we discuss the propagation of torsional waves in tapered regions and in particular, transmission of the fundamental torsional mode.
