Improvement of the total focusing method using an inverse problem approach [PDF]

open access: yes2017 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS), 2017
Imaging using the total focusing method (TFM) is a popular tool, which is becoming a standard, for nondestructive testing and evaluation. From full matrix capture data, it consists in focusing at each point of a defined reconstruction zone. It is generally more efficient than conventional phased array focusing, which only focuses at a few points ...

Ultrasonic Inspection of Weld Defects Using Total Focusing Method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Ultrasonic arrays have been widely employed in industrial applications because of their ability to perform quick inspections for detection and characterization of flaws. The total focusing method (TFM) is an advanced ultrasonic imaging technique that utilizes the full matrix capture (FMC) data of the phased array elements to generate a high-resolution ...

An optimized total focusing method based on delay-multiply-and-sum for nondestructive testing

Ultrasonics, 2023
Total focusing method (TFM) attracts much interest because of high image resolution and large inspection coverage. However, the synthetic focusing approach based on delay-and-sum beamforming employs only the defect information contained in the dataset while ignoring the spatial information of the array signals, leading to limited imaging performance ...

Ultrasonic imaging in coarse-grained stainless steels by total focusing method [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2016
In the present work, the Total Focusing Method (TFM) is used to image flaws in coarse-grained steels with a contact phased-array probe. In order to reduce the noise introduced by the heterogeneous structure, as well as artifacts due to surface guided waves, the Decomposition of the Time Reversal Operator method is performed before calculating TFM ...

Total Focusing Method With Virtual Sources in the Presence of Unknown Geometry Interfaces

IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control, 2016
Auto-focused virtual source imaging (AVSI) has been recently presented as an alternative method for synthetic aperture focusing through arbitrarily shaped interfaces with arrays. This paper extends the AVSI concept to the case of the total focusing method (TFM-AVSI) using several virtual receivers for each virtual source.

Total Focusing Method with Subsampling in Space and Frequency Domain for Ultrasound NDT [PDF]

open access: yes2019 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS), 2019
In this paper, we present a compressed sensing model for 2D Full Matrix Capture data from a uniform linear array. Data is reconstructed via a matrix-free implementation of the Total Focusing Method (TFM) combined with the Fast Iterative Shrinkage/ Thresholding Algorithm.

Total focusing method for non destructive evaluation: Toward real-time imaging systems [PDF]

open access: yes2013 IEEE 56th International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS), 2013
This paper describes a dedicated architecture for real-time imaging using the Total Focusing Method (TFM) and an advanced acquisition technique called the Full Matrix Capture (FMC). The architecture was entirely described using VHDL language and implemented on a V5FX70T Xilinx FPGA for the control part and a V5SX95T Xilinx FPGA for the acquisition part.
