Deflating the shale gas potential of South Africa’s Main Karoo Basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Main Karoo basin has been identified as a potential source of shale gas (i.e. natural gas that can be extracted via the process of hydraulic stimulation or ‘fracking’).

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Zn situation of vegetable garden soils and its relation to soil organic carbon

open access: yes浙江大学学报. 农业与生命科学版, 2000
With a field survey, Zn situation of vegetable garden soils and its relation to soil organic carbon were investigated. The results presented that the total Zn contents of vegetable garden soils in the survey area range 75.5-302.0 mg/kg with an average as

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Exploring the Origins of Carbon in Terrestrial Worlds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Given the central role of carbon in the chemistry of life, it is a fundamental question as to how carbon is supplied to the Earth, in what form and when.

The Application of Potentiometric Methods in Determination Total Organic Carbon Content of Soil

open access: yesInternational Journal on Advanced Science, Engineering and Information Technology, 2014
Potentiometric method is one method that is widely used to determine the content of certain ions in a solution, but have not been widely applied to the analysis of soil samples. In this research apply the potentiometric methods for the determination of total organic carbon content of solids affected by oil contamination using CO 2 selective electrode ...

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Effects of Different Mulching Measures on Distribution of Organic Carbon and Inorganic Carbon in Soil Aggregates Under Spring Maize Cultivation

open access: yesShuitu baochi tongbao, 2023
[Objective] The effects of different mulching methods on the distribution of organic and inorganic carbon in soil aggregates on the Loess Plateau, and the mechanism under which soil aggregates sequester carbon under mulched conditions were determined in ...

Changes in the Soil Microbial Hydrolytic Activity and the Content of Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen by Growing Spring Barley Undersown with Red Clover in Different Farming Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The experiments were carried out during 2012–2017. There were 5 crops in rotation: Red clover, winter wheat, pea, potato and barley undersown (us) with red clover.

Assessing Soil Functioning: What is the Added Value of Soil Organic Carbon Quality Measurements Alongside Total Organic Carbon Content?

open access: yesSoil Biology and Biochemistry
Soil organic carbon (SOC) content is the most widely used soil health indicator, but many soil functions are also influenced by the quality of SOC. Yet, standardized SOC quality parameters that can be used in soil health assessments in addition to SOC content are still in development.
