Physical accessibility of touchscreen smartphones

This paper examines the use of touchscreen smartphones, focusing on physical access. Using interviews and observations, we found that participants with dexterity impairment considered a smartphone both useful and usable, but tablet devices offer several important advantages. Cost is a major barrier to adoption.

Software-reduced touchscreen latency

Devices with touchscreens have an inherent latency. When a user's finger drags an object across the screen the object follows with a latency of around 100ms for current devices. Previous work showed that latencies down to 25ms reduce users' performance and that even 10ms latency is noticeable.

Multimodal vision glove for touchscreens

This paper presents the development of an inexpensive haptic glove enabling people with visual impairments to picture and interact with basic algebra graphs through multiple points of interaction on touchscreens. The glove sends vibrations to each finger representing a direction which the user must follow to reach a graph on a grid.
