Osmanlı Devleti’nde şehir tarihçiliği geleneğinin başlangıcını Şakir Şevket’in “Trabzon Tarihi” 1877 adlı eseri oluşturmaktadır. Onun bu cesaret ve gayreti kendisinden sonraki dönemde Trabzon Tarihi yazımı meselesini hep gündemde tutmuştur. Tarih-i Osmanî Encümeni’nin kurulması, Trabzon’da da bir şube oluşturulmasını sağlamıştır.
