Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Stationary Explosive Trace Detection System Using Differential Ion Mobility Spectrometry (DMS)

open access: yesSensors, 2023
Detecting trace amounts of explosives is important for maintaining national security due to the growing threat of terror attacks. Particularly challenging is the increasing use of homemade explosives.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Simultaneous removal of heavy metals from drinking water by banana, orange and potato peel beads: a study of biosorption kinetics

open access: yesApplied Water Science, 2021
Banana, orange and potato peels (BP, OP and PP, respectively) were immobilised to produce biosorbent beads that were employed for the biosorption of heavy metals from a cocktail solution containing As(V), Cd(II), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Hg(II) and Ni(II) ions ...

A Magnetic Nanocomposite Modifier for Improved Ultrasensitive Detection of Hexavalent Chromium in Water Samples

open access: yesChemosensors, 2021
In this work, different electrodes were employed for the determination of Cr(VI) by the cathodic square-wave voltammetry (SWV) technique and the square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry (SWAdSV) technique in combination with ...

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

Progress in the Application of Magnetic Nanoparticles in Forensic Trace Analysis

open access: yesFayixue Zazhi, 2023
Given the complexity of biological samples and the trace nature of target materials in forensic trace analysis, a simple and effective method is needed to obtain sufficient target materials from complex substrates.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Development and validation of an alternative method for ergosterol determination in alder leaves using liquid-liquid extraction and LC-MS/MS after saponification

open access: yesMethodsX
Ergosterol is widely used as proxy for the estimation of leaf litter associated fungal biomass. According to a common textbook method, ergosterol can be extracted from plant tissue with methanolic potassium hydroxide followed by purification with solid ...
