Complete Mitochondrial Genome of the Araucanian Herring, Strangomera bentincki, Norman, 1936 (Teleostei: Clupeiformes: Clupeidae): Phylogenetic Analysis and Implications in Fishmeal Traceability. [PDF]
Araucanian herring (Strangomera bentincki) is a pelagic fish whose main processed products are fishmeal and oil. The complete mitogenome is 16,758 bp, consisting of 13 coding genes, two rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and the control region. Phylogenetic analysis supported a monophyletic clade with Sprattus muelleri and Sprattus antipodum.

Heavy metals can contaminate fish and water which in turn present a risk to humans. The dearth of eco-toxicological data on the heavy metal content in Trachurus trachurus particularly from cold storage in Benin Metropolis, Nigeria, warranted this ...

Age validation in horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) otoliths [PDF]
Two methods were used to validate age determination of horse mackerel otoliths. In the first, whole otoliths were examined with a light microscope. Age was determined by identifying and counting annuli. Marginal increment widths were also measured and served to estimate ages, which ranged from 0.6–4.3 years. In the second method, otoliths were examined

A study on the mercury content in muscles in the fish family Carangidae from the fishing grounds off the coast of north-west Africa [PDF]
The mercury content in muscles was determined for 171 fishes belonging to three species of the family Carangidae. Significant differences in the content of this element were found between the species.

A decline in the energy content of forage fish in the Bay of Biscay. [PDF]
Abstract Planktonic production fuels the base of marine food webs and can mediate energy accumulation in consumers but is affected by several anthropogenic pressures. Our understanding of how shifts in prey quality at various trophic level shape marine food webs remains poor.
